Spanish Guitar Recital and Illustrated Lecture by Maestro Julio Reyes
Join us at Holy Names University in the beautiful Oakland Hills for another exciting program in the Spring 2017 APPSI Speaker Series, presented by the Asia Pacific Peace Studies Institute (APPSI). This program is co-sponsored by the HNU Core Program in Integrative Studies Across Cultures and the HNU Music Department.
Maestro Julio Reyes will tell us about the life and perform the music of the great Paraguayan composer/guitarist Agustín Barrios Mangoré (1885-1944). “Dubbed ‘the Paganini of the guitar’... Agustín Barrios Mangoré composed more than 300 pieces for his instrument, many of which have [been lost]. But those that have endured into the 21st century hold a rare allure, with such beguiling pieces as ‘La Catedral,’ ‘Aire de Samba,’ ‘Choro de Saudade,’… having more in common with the nocturnal Romanticism of Chopin than the devilish pyrotechnics of Paganini.” (www.billboard.edu) Don’t miss this evening of music followed by a reception.
7:00-8:30 pm Lecture + Audience Q&A / 8:30-9:15 pm Reception catered by Epicurean
