For two weeks in June, more than 100 goats called Holy Names University home.
Goats R Us, a family-owned and operated grazing company, deploys its herd throughout the Bay Area to assist with fuel mitigation and the eradication of undesirable plant species, including thistles, berries, and poison oak. HNU uses the goats each summer to reduce fire danger posed by the dense grasses that line the campus.
Goats R Us was created in 1995 by a goat-loving couple wishing to incorporate the animals into their daily lives. Over 22 years, the Orinda-based company has grown from a generic brush-clearing business to a highly scientific and entrepreneurial organization, offering specialized vegetation management programs. Retired and off-duty goats visit schools, hospitals, and senior centers, both to entertain and to offer agricultural education in urban environments.
These friendly, four-legged lawn mowers have become a signature summer highlight in the HNU community. For more information, please visit goatsrus.com.
