Chelsea Nyirenda is a business management major at HNU that wants to make a difference in the global community.
Chelsea is from Zambia and has been directly impacted by the AIDS epidemic—family members have passed away from AIDS/HIV. After seeing her family struggle to afford the treatment they needed, she was inspired to try to make things better.
She reached out to her relatives in Zambia and they recommended that she partner with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) an organization deeply involved in helping the Zambian community. The AHF is able to funnel donated funds to specific sectors to ensure that every dollar raised goes directly to patient care, including wellness centers, prevention resources, and educational outreach.
In October 2017, Chelsea founded a 12-person committee to plan a fundraising gala for the AHF Zambian AIDS mission. The committee is passionate about the mission--half of the members have been directly impacted by AIDS/HIV. Chelsea also launched a donation website on YouCaring.com to encourage early giving.
Chelsea is proud that she was able to lay the groundwork for this event before graduating this year. She looks forward to continuing her dedication to social justice as an alumna and will be back next year to lead this event. The gala is scheduled for Fall 2018. Stay tuned for more details.
