Interpreting Your Assessment Results

What is my placement result and what does it mean?

At the end of your assessment you will be given your result immediately. Your result will be displayed as a percentage that reflects your mastery of the areas in which you were assessed. This percentage determines your placement level into mathematics workshops or coursework for which there is a placement prerequisite. A summary of the required placement results is below:

Placement Result Course Placement University credit for coursework?
13% or below MATH R No
    14-29% MATH C No
    30-45% MATH A No
    46-75% MATH 1, MATH 7, MATH 60, BSAD 20, CHEM 1A, CHEM 7, ECON 15, PHSC 15, PSYC 63 Yes
    76-100% MATH 11, PHYS 8A Yes

For course descriptions and program requirements refer to the HNU Catalog. To view your placement result at any time after assessment is complete, click on the placement tab on the upper right of the ALEKS page after login.

How long is my placement result valid?

Your placement result is valid for 12 months after which time it expires. Students with an expired placement result must complete a new assessment if they have not yet commenced the course(s) for which placement is required.

Can I retake the ALEKS Placement Assessment?

Yes, you may take up to two placement assessments (you must wait one week between assessments). To make an additional attempt worthwhile, it is important that you spend time working in your ALEKS Prep and Learning Module in between assessments.

What if I don’t place into the course I want to take, can I take it anyway?

No, you must achieve the minimum placement result to take each corresponding class. You can use a Prep and Learning Module to review and learn, and you may take a second assessment to attempt to improve your placement result.

I am currently an HNU student but I want to take the class I placed into elsewhere. Will the class transfer?

Developmental math classes are not transferable and cannot substitute for MATH A, C or R. University-level math classes must be individually assessed for equivalency (eligibility for substitution with a major) and/or GE credit. Please consult with you academic advisor.
