Sister Rosemarie Nassif, SSND, PhD, president of the university, noted that this Homecoming marked two very special occasions in the HNU history – the 50th year on this campus and the start of the celebration of 140 years in Oakland.
In her State of the University address at the Saturday luncheon, President Nassif traced the history of the university from the 10,000-mile trek by six founding sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary from Montreal, Canada, to the shores of Lake Merritt in 1868 -- to the present day campus. She said she was proud of the fact that this Fall, the university reached its highest enrollment in history – 1,108 students. For Sister Rosemarie’s entire speech, click here.
The President also announced that the university had received a gift of $140,000 from the estate of Marna Maynard (’56) and her mother’s estate (Mrs. Owens). They are the sister and mother of Sister Donna Maynard ’50, who was at Homecoming and was acknowledged by Sister Rosemarie at the luncheon. The gift has been designated as seed money to start the Faculty Development Fund.
Julie Echaniz, ’75, and Michael Mosby, ’88, were co-chairs of the Homecoming celebration. The day’s activities included a morning mass in the McLean Chapel; photo taking of the honors classes; a champagne and strawberries reception in the Mealey Living Room, and the luncheon in the Skyroom. |
