Season Ends With Route of Mills
Lady Hawks Narrowly Miss Region II Tournament
Oakland, CA - The Holy Names Women's Soccer program ended their season on a high note as they routed cross town rival Mills College 13-0 in a match played on the Mills campus. The Lady Hawks had held out hope that their strong finish and Longo rating would be enough to propel them into the NAIA Region II Tournament however it was not enough. Holy Names finishes with a 7-8-1 record overall including a 4-1 mark in Cal Pac play. After a slow start against a brutal schedule Holy Names finished very strong going undefeated in their last seven games of the season with their only blemish a 1-1 tie against Notre Dame de Namur University. Holy Names, who played 4 of the top 10 teams in the country early on, finished in second place in the Cal Pac behind undefeated menlo College.
Against Mills, super junior Roccio Ferree scored 5 goals bringing her season total to 21, a new school record. Katie Clark added a hat trick of her own while Joceleyn Doepker chipped in two goals. The scoring was rounded out by a goal apiece from Lauren Vonnegut, Serena Macias and Allison Lee. Lee closes out her career as the only four year player in the programs history. Lee was the lone remaining member of the team that started the program four years ago.
Ferree Named Cal Pac, Region II Player of the Week
Holy Names junior Rocio Ferree was named both the California Pacific Conference and the NAIA Region II Player of the Week for her efforts in a 6-0 win over Simpson University and a 1-1 tie with Notre Dame de Namur University. Ferree recorded a hat trick in the Simpson win and scored the Hawks only goal in the tie with former Cal Pac rival Notre Dame. The West Covina native has been on a tear of late scoring 11 goals over her last 5 games leading her team to a 4-0-1 record over that span.
Holy Names Jumps to 2-1 Cal Pac Start
After losing a tough 3-0 conference opener to Menlo College, Holy Names notched their second win of the season and their first Cal Pac victory with a 2-1 thriller over rival Dominican University. With the game knotted at 1-1 with less than 2 minutes left in regulation, Rocio Ferree turned a Lauren Vonnegut pass into the game winning goal lifting the Lady Hawks to their first conference win of the season. The game winner was Ferree's second goal of the game and 6th of the season.
The Lady Hawks improved to 2-1 in conference play four days later with a 4-0 shutout of visiting Bethany University. Raxanna Avila played posted a shutout saving both of Bethany's shots on goal. Ferree again scored 2 goals while Linsey Musante added the other two, her first of the season. Jocelyn Doepker, Lauren Vonnegut and Musante all recorded assists. Holy Names is now 3-8 on the season with their other victory a 8-0 route of conference foe William Jessup in a non conference game. Holy Names travels to Jessup on Saturday in a Cal Pac match up.
Holy Names Loses Double Overtime Heartbreaker
A goal by Melissa Freeman in the 107th minute of a double overtime thriller gave The Masters College a 2-1 win over Holy Names University Friday afternoon. Holy Names, trying for their second consecutive victory, tied the game at 1-1 on a Lauren Vonnegut goal just before the half. The two teams would remained knotted at 2 through all of the second half, all of the first overtime and nearly all of the second before Freeman's heroics ended the overtime affair. Holy Names drops to 1-5 on the season and travels to Portland this weekend to take on #5 Concordia (OR) and #7 Simon Fraser.
Lady Hawks Notch Season's First Victory
Shutout William Jessup 8-0
Rocklin, CA - Holy Names University recorded their first win of the season with an non-conference 8-0 route of conference foe William Jessup Tuesday. Holy Names improves to 1-4 with the win. The Lady Hawks outshot Jessup 27-4 and were led by Rocio Ferree's first half hat trick. Katherine Clark nocked in two goals and dished out one assist while Lauren Vonnegut recorded 1 goal and 2 assists. Jocelyn Doepker and Katherine Clark each added goals finishing off the scoring.
Holy Names hosts GSAC member The Master's College on Friday before traveling to Portland to battle two of the Nation's Top 10 teams in #5 Concordia (OR) and 7th ranked Simon Fraser.
Lady Hawks Fall to #2, #7
HNU Drops 4th Straight
Holy Names traveled to Southern California and met up with two of the premier NAIA soccer programs as the lost to 7th ranked Biola University 2-0 and #2 Azusa Pacific University 4-0. Holy Names drops to 0-4 on the season. Three of the four losses have come to members of the soccer power Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC). HNU lost a 4-1 game at Fresno Pacific University on September 10.
Holy Names held serve with Biola for 77 minutes before a Jennifer Loya goal broke the 0-0 tie. Biola added another goal with 10 seconds left in the game for the 2-0 win. Goalkeeper Roxanna Avila recorded 10 saves in the game as Holy Names was outshot 29-0. Avila was busy the next night as well as she saved 13 of the 17 shots on goal by Azusa. Azusa recorded 2 goals in each half for the 4-0 win.
Holy Names tough schedule does not ease up. After a non-conference match with conference opponent William Jessup on Tuesday, the Lady Hawks will host another GSAC school in The Masters College on Friday. They follow that up with a trip to Portland to meet Concordia UNiversity (OR) and Simon Fraser who are currently ranked #5 and #8 respectively.
Fresno Tops Holy Names 4-1
Fresno, CA - Holy Names dropped a non-conference match at Fresno Pacific University 4-1 Saturday. Rocio Ferree scored her first goal of the season in the 75th minute to pull the Lady Hawks to within a goal at 2-1. The score remained there for the next 20 minutes until Fresno broke out for two goals by Brooke Wininger in the match's final four minutes for the 4-1 win. HNU drops to 0-2 on the season and travels to Southern California this weekend to take on Azusa Pacific and Biola, the Nation's 3rd and 7th ranked teams respectively
