Men's Soccer Adds Two to the Mix
The Holy Names Men's Soccer Program is excited to announce the signings of to student-athletes to Letters of Intent this past week. Joining the men's soccer program for the 2005-2006 season are Ricky Vargas, a freshman midfielder from Modesto, CA and Mike Herman, a goalkeeper transferring in from Saint Mary's College. Holy Names is looking to repeat as Cal Pac Champs, something the accomplished in just their third season of competition.

Hart, Tinjaca Sign Letters of Intent
Men's Soccer coach Lance Thompson announced the signing of two athletes to National Letters of Intent last week. Tim Hart and Jonathan Tinjaca both announced their commitment to attend Holy Names in the fall and join a soccer program that is coming off it's best season. HNU is coming off it's first National Tournament appearance this past season, beating Grand View College in their first game after a first round bye. Holy Names, who won both the Cal Pac and Region II Championship, fell to eventual champion Lindenwood the next day.
Hall, a much needed talent at the goalkeeper position, is a transfer from the University of Rio Grande where he was a member of the 2003 National Championship squad. A native of Coventry, England, Hart attended Woodway Park High School.
Tinjaca meanwhile is a native of Upland, CA and attends Upland High School where he was a 1st Team All-Baseline League as well as a 2nd Team All-CIF selections. Tinjaca recorded 15 goals and 7 assists in 25 games this past season and in 2003-2004 was selected a varsity level player for USA Sports and represented the USA in the Haarlem Cup in Amsterdam, Holland where his team reached the semi finals.
All-Americans Sign With Thunder Bay Chill
Santos, Souza Heading North for the Summer
Holy Names University Men's Soccer players Marcelo Santos and Guilherme Souza have signed to play with the Canadian Thunder Bay Chill of the Premier Development League. Santos and Souza, both Brazilian natives, helped lead the Hawks to their best season to date with a Cal Pac Championship, an NAIA Region II Championship and an NAIA National Tournament appearance, all firsts for the young program. After a first round bye, Holy Names beat Grand View College before losing to eventual champion Lindenwood. The duo were both named All-Cal Pac, All-Region and NAIA All-Americans for their efforts. Holy Names Wins Prestigious Nels Dahlquist Award
Ono Named All-Tournament, Edenvik, Souza, Santos All-American
The awards keep coming for the 2004 Holy Names University Men's Soccer program, and they just keep getting better as well. After advancing all the way to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament, the Holy Names Men's Soccer Program was awarded the Nels Dahlquist Memorial Team Sportsmanship Award. The National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Associtation (NISOA) presents a Team Sportsmanship Award in honor of Nels Dahlquist, a former NISOA Official and NAIA Hall of Fame Inductee.
Sukui Ono, a sophomore forward from Fukoka, Japan was named to the twelve member 2004 Men's Soccer National Championship All-Tournament Team for his efforts in the National Tournament. In addition Tobias Edenvik, Guilherme Souza and Marcelo Santos were all named NAIA All-American for the 2004 season. Each was named Honorable Mention All-American, the first for Souza and the second time that Sanos and Edenvik have been awarded this honor.

Season Ends in 2nd Round of NAIA National Tournament
4-1 Loss to Lindenwood Ends Cinderella Season
Olathe, KS - The Holy Names University Men's Soccer season came to a crashing halt in the second round of the 2004 NAIA National Tournament Saturday. After advancing with a decisive 3-0 victory over Grand View College (IA) on Friday, Holy Names met up with the tournament's #3 seed Lindenwood University (MO) and were defeated 4-1. Holy Names tied it up at 1-1 early on Guilherme Souza's 32nd goal of the season but could not find the net again as Lindenwood would put three more on the board for the 4-1, sending Holy Names home with an 11-7-3 record.

Holy Names Advances with 3-0 Win
Hawks Will Meet 3rd Seeded Lindenwood on Saturday
Olathe, KS - Holy Names University continued their journey into unchartered waters with a decisive 3-0 win over 11th seeded Grand View College in the 2004 NAIA National Tournament. Goals by Guilherme Souza, Joaquin Escoto and Joel Jonasson and a shutout by keeper Chris Brunson paced the Hawks in the victory. Brunson saved the only two Grand View shots on goal. Holy Names will meet Lindenwood University, the tournaments #3 seed, in the quarterfinals Saturday at 5:00PM. The winner of that game will play for the 2004 NAIA National Championship. 3 Hawks Named All-Region, Souza Co-Cal Pac MVP
Holy Names Men's Soccer placed an unprecedented three players on the NAIA Region II All-Region Team led by the 2004 Co-Cal Pac Player of the Year Guilherme Souza. Holy Names tied Fresno Pacific with the most players honored by the region. Marcelo Santos and Tobias Edenvik joined Souza on the team.
Souza, Edenvik and Santos were joined by Jens Ljungcrantz on the California Pacific Conference's 2004 All-Conference 1st Team while Fernando Sepulveda, Beto Vega, Sukui Ono and Ricardo Marquez were named 2nd Team All-Cal Pac for their efforts this season. Olathe, KS - The Holy Names Men's Soccer program will open the 2004 NAIA National Tournament against the field's #11 seed, Grand View College out of Des Moines, IA. Holy Names received the #6 seed out of the 20 team field. Holy Names and Grand View will meet on Friday, November 19 at 11:00AM P.S.T. Ironically, by the time the two teams take the field, 10 teams will have been eliminated from the tournament.

Holy Names Upsets #3 Azusa Pacific In Region II Final
Holy Names University Men's Soccer made program, school and conference history with a win over #3 ranked Azusa Pacific University 4-3 on penalty kicks. Holy Names receives the region's automatic berth into the NAIA National Tournament. In just it's third season of competition, Holy Names makes it's first appearance in the dance and becomes the first California Pacific Conference member to make a showing at the National Tournament. Third Time is a Charm
Holy Names Beats Notre Dame 1-0 in OT
CSU Hayward - It took three tries, and in the most important attempt, Holy Names beat Notre Dame de Namur 1-0 to advance to the NAIA Region II final. After tying the Argonauts 2-2 in the regular season and losing to them 4-0 in the Cal Pac Tournament Championship game it was finally the Hawks turn and still took overtime. Jauquin Escoto scored his first goal of the season in the 93rd minute to give Holy Names the 1-0 win and a spot in the regional final against the Nation's 3rd ranked Azusa Pacific. Chris Brunson pitched a shutout in the net against the Argo's stopping 7 shots on goal in 93 minutes. The winner of the Region II final will receive an automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament.
Ironically, Holy Names opened their 2004 season with a 3-1 loss to Azusa Pacific back on August 27 in the Westmont Tournament. Since that opening weekend Holy Names has gotten stronger and stronger as the season has gone on beating then #22 Madonna (4-0), tying then #6 Southern Nazarene (3-3), losing tight ones to then #2 Fresno Pacific (2-1 and NCAA Div. III power UC Santa Cruz (2-1). In and around all of that the Hawks managed to sweep through the Cal Pac regular season unbeaten, the only blemish a 2-2 tie at rival Notre Dame de Namur University. Prior to their loss to Notre Dame in the Cal Pac Tournament finals the Hawks had broken into the NAIA Top 25 in the Receiving Votes section for the first time in school history.
Azusa meanwhile has dominated all season from beginning to end. After beginning the season in the Receiving Votes section the Cougars jumped all the way to #9 in the country by the first regular season poll. Azusa has remained in the Top 10 the entire season and has been sitting in the #3 slot for the past six weeks. Azusa brings a 16-1-1 record to the game, their only blemishes a 2-2 tie with Concordia (OR) back on September 10 and a 4-3 loss to Point Loma Nazarene on the final game of the GSAC regular season. Men's Soccer Stopped 4-0 in Cal Pac Title Game
CSU Hayward - When Holy Names and Notre Dame de Namur met on the soccer field earlier this month four goals were scored, two by each team. Saturday, four goals were scored once agian only this time it was all Notre Dame as they blank the Hawks 4-0 to claim the Cal Pac Tournament title and an automatic seed in the NAIA Region II playoff. First half goals by Meik Fischer-Phifer and Adriano Toni and second half goals by James Chavez and the Cal Pac's Co-Player of the Year Nick Hooper accounted for all the scoring. Notre Dame's Mike Whittaker pitched a shutout as he stopped 7 shots on goal in the win.

Santos Named Player of the Week
The Holy Names Men's Soccer team's chance at history was postponed for a few days due to field conditions following the rain storms earlier this week. Originally scheduled for Tuesday, the Cal Pac Tournament Championship game between the Hawks and the Argonauts of Notre Dame de Namur University will now be played on Saturday, October 30 at 1:00PM on the campus of CSU Hayward.
Holy Names is experiencing the best season in their short history, going 5-0-1 in Cal Pac play to grab the regular season title and the #1 seed in the conference tournament. Holy Names used a 6-0 win over Menlo College in the semi finals to advance to Saturday's game.
Holy Names also received votes for the NAIA's Top 25, the first time in their history they have appeared on the list. In addition, Junior Marcelo Santos was named the Cal Pac Men's Soccer Player of the Week for his efforts last week.

Hawks Beat Menlo 6-0
Hayward, CA - On a cold, wet and sloppy day, the Holy Names men's soccer team continued their journey into uncharted waters as they beat Menlo College 6-0 in the conference semifinals to advance to the California Pacific Conference Tournament Championship game. Holy Names entered the tournament as the #1 seed, a result of their regular season championship. Sukui Ono got the Hawks started early as he delivered a goal off a Simon Gustafson pass in the 29 th minute. Marcelo Santos added two more goals in a 5 minute span, the second one a spectacular diving header into the corner of the net to send the Hawks into halftime with a 3-0 lead. Holy Names would match their first half scoring on goals by Erik Frederiksen, Eduardo Gonzalez and a second from Ono. Ricardo Marquez recorded his 5 th shutout of the year as he recorded a save in each half.
Holy Names improves to 9-5-2 with the win and will take on defending champion Notre Dame de Namur University Tuesday, with the conference tournament championship and an automatic berth in the NAIA Far West Region playoffs on the line. Game time is set for 1:00pm on the campus of CSU Hayward.

Men's Soccer Clinches With 3-1 Win Over Menlo
Hayward, CA - Holy Names University Men's Soccer beat Menlo College 3-1 to clinch the first California Pacific Conference championship in the short history of the program. The program is in its third year of competition and just their second in the Cal Pac, playing as an independent the first season.
After a scoreless first half Guilherme Souza, the NAIA Far West Region's leading scorer, scored two goals in a four minute span, the first on a beautiful bending free kick in the 53 rd minute and the second off a pass from teammate Sukio Ono in the 57 th . Marcelo Santos stretched the lead out to 3-0 off a pass from Juaqin Escoto at the 84 minute mark. Armando San Vincente got the Menlo Oaks on the board with just under a minute to play, knocking in a goal just past the outstretched arms of Holy Names keeper Ricardo Marquez for the final score of 3-1.
Holy Names finishes conference play undefeated at 5-0-1 with their only blemish a 2-2 tie with defending champ Notre Dame de Namur University in the conference opener. Holy Names will receive the conference tournament's #1 seed and ironically will most likely play Menlo College again. Regardless of the opponent, Holy Names will host the tournament opener Saturday, October 23 on the campus of CSU Hayward.
Holy Names Sails Into First Place
Hawks Stop Dominican 3-2
San Rafael, CA - Holy Names University took over sole possession of first place with a physical, hard fought 3-2 win over arch rival Dominican University Tuesday afternoon. Both teams entered with identical 2-0-1 conference records including identical 2-2 ties with defending champ Notre Dame de Namur University.
Joel Jonsson got the Hawks started early knocking in a goal off a rebound just 11 minutes into the game. Tobias Edenvik upped the lead to 2-0 just before the half on a penalty kick. The score would remain there until the 75th minute when the Penguins, playing with a man down due to a red card, scored on a JP Macarvel goal off a pass from Patrick Jackson. After Holy Names upped the lead to 3-1 on a Guilherme Souza goal in the 84th minute, Dominican lost yet another player to a red card. Despite playing down two men, the Penguins would strike again with Randy Kline scoring off a McCarvel pass bringing the score to 3-2 where it would remain until the final whistle.
Holy Names moves to 3-0-1 with two games remaining. The Hawks will take on CSU Maritime on Thursday before finishing with Menlo College on Monday, October 18. Two wins by the Hawks or a win by the Hawks and a loss by either Notre Dame or Dominican would clinch the first Men's Soccer conference title for Holy Names in just their third year of existence.

Edenvik Scores 4 in 16-0 Win
Oakland , CA - Holy Names University improved to 5-4-2 on the season with a dominant 16-0 win over the Bruins of Bethany College. The Hawks got it started early scoring on a Tobias Edenvik penalty kick just 58 seconds into the game. Edenvik would finish with a school record tying four goals on the day, the second time in a week he has performed the feat. Guilherme Souza added 3 goals and an assist while Marcelo Santos notched 2 goals and 3 assists. Sukio Ono and Fernando Sepulveda added tow goals apiece while Nick Hamann assisted on two goals.
Holy Names out shot the Bruins 25-2 in the win. Chris Brunson and Ricardo Marquez split time in the net, each playing a half and recording a save. Brunson spent the second half in the field recording his first goal of the year.
Hawks Win Big; Records Fall
Holy Names Routs Simpson 12-0
Redding, CA - Holy Names Men's Soccer upped their record to 4-4-2 with a record setting 12-0 win at Simpson University Wednesday. Freshman keeper Ricardo Marquez notched his third shutout of the season while his teammates set the school record for goals scored in a game. The Hawks twelve goals surprised the previous high of nine which has happened twice in the program's short history.
In addition Tobias Edenvik matched the school record for individual goals scored in a game held by teammate Guilherme Souza and Lucas Wetmore as he knocked in four in the win. Souza meanwhile continues his onslaught of the programs record book. In addition to shattering the school record for assists in a single game with five, the 5-7 freshmen's 3 goals in the game gives him 18 on the season not only setting the single season record but surpassing teammate Eric Frederiksen's career record of 16 goals, scored over the last three seasons.
The Hawks improve to 1-0-1 in Cal Pac play this season and play Bethany College Saturday, October 9 at Mills College in Oakland. Game time is set for 3PM following the Holy Names women's game at 1PM.

Freshman Scores Five More Goals
Freshman Guilherme Souza was named the California Pacific Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. The Londrina, Brazil native scored five goals in two games on the week including a school record tying four goals in a 6-0 win at Menlo College. Souza added one goal in a 2-2 tie at Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday.
Souza continues his onslaught of the program's record book. The 5-7 freshman already holds the record for goals in a single game (4) and goals in a single season (15) and is now just one goal shy of Eric Frederiksen's career record of 16 goals.

Belmont, CA - Holy Names and Notre Dame de Namur used two extra frames to try and decide the match but had to settle for a 2-2 tie. The Argonauts scored first on a Adriano Toni direct kick just 15 minutes into the game. Holy Names tied it up in the 37th minute on a goal by Fernando Sepulveda sending the two teams into halftime at 1-1. Notre Dame again struck quickly as Nick Hooper scored off a pass from Jose Pinal in the 53rd minute. Twenty hard played minutes later Guilherme Souza, the Cal Pac's leading scorer, scored on a penalty kick to tie it up at 2-2 and force the overtime periods. Neither team was able to capitalize on opportunites in the extra frames as keepers Ricardo Marquez and Mike Whittaker both came up with huge saves down the stretch. The game ended as a 2-2 tie. Holy Names moves to 3-4-2 on the season and 0-0-1 in Cal Pac play.

Freshman Knocks in Four Goals vs Menlo
Atherton, CA - Holy Names Men's soccer improved to 3-4-1 on the season with a 6-0 non conference win at Menlo College Monday. Guilherme Souza, fresh off being named the Cal Pac and NAIA Region II Player of the Week, tied a school record with four goals in the win. Souza matches Lucas Wetmore who scored four goals in a 9-0 rout of Bethany College on September 25, 2002. In addition, Souza's 14 goals on the season has already shattered the school record previously held by both Erik Frederiksen and Alex Rodriguez who scored 9 goals last season and is just 2 off of the career record of 16 goals held by Frederiksen.
Holy Names jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the half on a goal by Mark Maurer and a hat trick by Souza. Souza and Maurer each added a goal in the second half to complete the scoring while Marcelo Santos and Stephen Roundfield each recorded assists. Keeper Ricardo Marquez, making just his second start in the net, recorded his second shutout in as many tries.
Holy Names will next take on Notre Dame de Namur University Saturday in Belmont, CA in the conference opener for both teams. Notre Dame currently sits just outside the Top 25 in the most recent NAIA poll. Game time is set for 3:00pm.

Freshman Named NAIA Regional Player of the Week
Freshman forward Guilherme Souza went three for three in honors this past week being named not only the Holy Names University Athlete of the Week and the Cal Pac Player of the Week but also the NAIA Region II Player of the Week as well. The 5-7 native of Londrina, Brazil becomes the first Holy Names soccer player to recieve the regional honor. In addition Souza is automatically nominated for the NAIA National Player of the Week.
Souza led his team to one win and one tie on the week, scoring two goals in each game. He first knocked in a pair of goals in a 4-1 win against Westminster Collegen (UT) and followed up that performance by scoring two in the final 24 minutes of regulation to bring the Hawks back from a 3-1 deficit to the Nation's number 6th ranked Southern Nazarene University. They went on to tie the Crimson Storm 3-3 in double overtime.

Souza's 2 Late Goals Lead the Hawks to a 3-3 Tie
Hayward, CA - Holy Names Men's Soccer took on #6 Southern Nazarene University Friday and nearly pulled off the upset going the distance and finishing with a 3-3 tie. The Hawks fell behind early in the contest as Robert Oguda sent a 35 yard rocket off the left goal post and in to the net just 11 minutes in. Billy Alven made it 2-0 just 24 minutes later converting on a pass from teammate Harouna Pare to finish off the first half scoring.
Marcelo Santos got Holy Names back in the game with a goal off a Luke Liberty pass in the 55 th minute but Southern bounced right back with Alven notching his second goal, this time off a pass from Daniel Agina in the 57 th minute. It was then time for Guilherme Souza to go to work. The freshman forward from Londrina, Brazil knocked in his first goal on a free kick at the 66 minute mark to bring the Hawks within one. He then pulled the Hawks even with a penalty kick goal at the 83 minute mark to complete the comeback. With less then a minute remaining in regulation, Holy Names back up keeper Ricardo Marquez made a spectacular stop on a penalty kick to force the extra frames. Neither team could finish it off as they played to 10 minute periods with a score.
Holy Names drops to 2-4-1 with the tie. In addition to their tie with Southern, Holy Names has lost to #2 Fresno Pacific (2-1), # 5 Azusa Pacific (3-1) and #21 Westmont (3-2). Holy Names has beaten Westminster College and Madonna, who at the time was ranked #22 in the Nation.
Southern Nazarene is now 6-1-1 on the year and will take on Westminster Saturday at 2:30pm on the campus of CSU Hayward.

Souza Knocks in Two Goals
Hayward, CA - Holy Names University Men's Soccer notched their second win of the young season with a 4-1 victory over Westminster College of Salt Lake City, UT. Holy Names grabbed the early lead on a Guilherme Souza goal off a pass from teammate Tobias Flueckiger around the 20 minute mark. The score would remain the same until Nima Mahak knocked in a 20 footer for the Griffins the 58 th minute to tie it up at 1-1.
That Westminster goal seemed to wake up the Hawks as they answered back just 4 minutes later and scored three goals in an eight minute span. Mark Maurer started it off converting on a pass from Joaquin Escoto at the 68th minute. Marcelo Santos hit in the next off a pass from Jens Ljungcrantz at the 68th minute and Souza finished it off by knocking in a penalty kick at the 70 minute mark.
Holy Names improves to 2-4 on the season with three of their losses coming to #2 Fresno Pacific, #5 Azusa Pacific and #21 Westmont College. Holy Names will take on #6 Southern Nazarene University tomorrow, Friday September 24 at CSU Hayward. Game starts at 11:30am. Westminster will play Southern Nazarene on Saturday.
#2 Fresno Pacific Squeaks by Hawks
Sunbirds Edge Holy Names 2-1
Fresno, CA - Second half goals by Jared Dugger and Eli Delgado thwarted an upset bid by the visiting Holy Names University Hawks as the No. 2 Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds pulled out a 2-1 win at Steinert Field Saturday evening.
Tobias Edenvik hammered home a rebound off a free kick just 14:24 into the match to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. That stood until 57:57 when Dugger launched a 30-yard rocket from the left side to tie it at 1-1. Delgado scored his game winner off a rebound of Hawk goalie Chris Brunson who two fisted a pass away from Sunbird Orlando Ramirez right to Delgado who one-timed it low into the right corner of the goal. With just under 5:28 to play, Fresno packed it in to preserve the win and remain unbeaten at 6-0-0.
"I think we are the best 1-4 team in the country," declared Hawks coach Lance Thompson. "We are starting to play some good soccer. This was a great learning opportunity for our players. Fresno is a great team. This was a great battle."

Hawks Produce Mixed Results
Men's Soccer Goes 1-1 in Point Loma Tournament
San Diego, CA - The Holy Names Men's Soccer team returned home from San Diego with one heartbreaking loss and one impressive win. On Thursday, Holy Names blew a 3-0 second half lead to the host Sea Lions and lost 4-3. A hat trick by freshman Guilherme Souza was wasted as Point Loma scored 4 goals, 3 by Brian Thames and 2 by penalty kicks, in the final 25 minutes to complete the comeback and hand Holy Names their 3rd loss of the young season.
Holy Names was able to bounce back in impressive fashion Saturday to knock off the Nation's 22nd ranked team, Madonna University of Livonia, MI by the score of 4-0. Eric Frederiksen and Eduardo Gonzalez each knocked in a goal while Souza followed up his hat trick with two more goals, giving him 5 on the weekend. Holy Names now stands at 1-3.

Hawks Drop a Pair
Santa Barbara, CA - The Holy Names Men's Soccer team traveled to Santa Barbara, CA to compete in the Heritage Club Classic at Westmont College and came home with two heartbreaking losses.
On Friday Azusa Pacific, who sits just outside the NAIA's Top 25 on the preseason poll, defeated the Hawks 3-1. The Cougars struck first during the 33rd minute when Kris Van Houten landed a 22 yard kick in the back of the net to provide the only scoring of the first half. Two minutes into the second half the Hawks Guilherme Souza kicked in a deflection off of an Azusa Pacific player to tie the score at one.
Brandon Stim provided the game winning goal for the Cougars on an unassisted goal from 15 yards out. Late in the game, Van Houten recorded his second goal of the day to complete the 3-1 victory.
Saturday's result was a little closer and twice as heartbreaking. Early in the second half Marcelo Santos scored off a pass from Tobias Edenvik to tie the score at one. Westmont scored the next two goals to take the momentum back from Holy Names before Edenvik scored in the 78th minute to pull within one of the Warriors. HNU could not find another goal to make up the difference and lost 3-2. Holy Names is now 0-2 on the young season.

The 2004 Men's Soccer Schedule was released today. Holy Names will open their season August 27 and 28 at the Heritage Classic in Santa Barbara, CA as they take on Region II powers Azusa Pacific University and Westmont College. To view the full schedule click here.

Holy Names University (HNU) is pleased to announce the hiring of Lance Thompson as Head Men's Soccer Coach. Coach Thompson began his tenure in January, 2004, and jumped into an intense spring season in preparation for the 2004 season. Coach Thompson comes to HNU from Alliant International University, where he compiled an impressive 54-21-3 record, garnering National Rankings of #25 (2002), and #7 (2003). His teams were perennial regional and national tournament contenders, earning 2 Region II Tournament appearances and 2 NAIA National Tournament appearances. During his time at Alliant, Coach Thompson's athletes earned numerous individual accolades as well, as he coached 4 NAIA All-Americans, 4 All-Region players, 8 Academic All-Americans, 4 Region II Players of the Week, and 1 National Player of the Week. This fall, Coach Thompson will look to continue his success, building on the progressive success of the previous two HNU seasons.
