Lady Hawks Nipped by Argonauts

Season Ends With 2-1 Loss to #12 Notre Dame

Belmont, CA - It was the same team, it was the same result but it was a far different story as Holy Names' season ended at the hands of #12 Notre Dame de Namur University in the California Pacific Conference semifinals by the score of 2-1.  Last season the Lady Hawks advanced to the conference playoffs and were ousted by the same Argonauts 10-0 in the first round. 

Holy Names fell behind 2-0 on goals by Julie Loucks and Amber Davidson in the game's first 27 minutes.  Lauren Vonegut pulled the Lady Hawks within one on a direct kick goal at the 40th minute.  That would end the scoring for the afternoon as Notre Dame held on for the win and the opportunity to defend their title in the Cal Pac title game.

Holy Names finishes at 6-7-2 on the season tying the program's record for most wins and breaking the record for fewest losses.  In the programs two years in the conference they have advanced to the playoffs both years.

Ferree Nets Hat Trick in Win

Holy Names Beats Mills 5-0

Oakland, CA - Roccio Ferree recorded 3 goals and an assists to lead her Lady Hawk teammates to a 5-0 win over Mills College.  Rounding out the scoring for Holy Names was Serena Macias and Nicole Martinez who each recorded a goal.  Carlee Stinton recorded her 4th shutout of the year saving three shots o goal.  Holy Names improves to 6-6-2 on the season including 4-2 in Cal Pac play.

Doepker Completes Lady Hawk Comeback

Diving Header in 74th Minute Beats Dominican

San Rafael, CA - Holy Names University beat arch rival Dominican University in dramatic fashion Wednesday, coming from behind to to hand the Penguins a loos on their home field.  Dominican took a 1-0 lead into halftime.  Lauren Vonegut got the Hawks even with a goal off a free kick from about 25 yards out.  The score would sit at 1-1 until the 74th minute when Jocylyn Doepker made a spectacular diving header into the net off a corner kick from Vonegut to give Holy Names the lead and eventually the win.  Holy Names was able to control the ball for the majority of the remainder of the game to secure the victory.

Holy Names improves to 3-2 in Cal Pac play with two games to go. The Lady Hawks will next be in action at Mills College on October 15 at 11:00AM..

Martinez Sweeps Cal Pac, Regional Honors

Sophomore Named NAIA Region II Player of the Week

Sophomore midfielder Nicole Martinez swept the Player of the Week honors for her performance during a perfect 2-0 week.  Not only was Martinez named the Holy Names Athlete of the Week, but the Bakersfield native also was named the Cal Pac Player of the Week and the NAIA Region II Player of the Week as well.  Martinez set a new school record by knocking in 5 goals in the 9-0 win at Simpson University.  She added an assist in that game and helped the Lady Hawks to a 1-0 win over Bethany College four days later.  Holy Names is now 2-2 in Cal Pac play with two games to go.

Holy Names Nips the Bruins

Ferree's Goal Gives Lady Hawks 1-0 Win

 

Oakland, CA - Roccio Ferree's goal in the 53 rd minute broke a 0-0 tie and gave the Holy Names University women's soccer program a 1-0 win over Bethany College.   Holy Names had twelve shots on goal but could not connect as Bethany's keeper Terra Bliss kept the Bruins in the game recording 11 saves.   Holy Names' keeper Carlee Stinton meanwhile recorded her third shutout of the year recording 6 saves of her own in the win.

 

Holy Names improves their record to 4-6-2 overall and 2-2 in Cal Pac play.

Martinez Breaks School Record in 9-0 Rout

Sophomore Knocks in 5 goals in Win Over Simpson

Redding, CA - Sophomore midfielder Nicole Martinez recorded five goals, including three in the first half, to lead the charge as Holy Names snapped a five game losing streak by beating Simpson University 9-0.  The Bakersfield native broke the school record for goals in a single game and recorded just the second hat trick in the program's short history.  Martinez broke the record previously held by former teammate Krystal Bernal who scored three goals in a 7-1 win over Mills College back on October 17, 2003.

Roccio Ferree and Jocylyn Doepker each recorded a goal and two assists while Allison Lee and Madeline Anthony chipped in a goal apiece.  Freshman keeper Carlee Stinton recorded saved the only shot on goal and recorded her second shutout of the season.  Holy Names ups their record to 3-6-2, including 1-2 in conference play.  The Lady Hawks will next be in action this Saturday as they take on the Bethany College Bruins at Mills College in Oakland, CA.  The game starts at 1:00PM.

#7 Notre Dame de Namur Downs the Hawks

Argonauts Beat Holy Names 3-1

Belmont, CA - Notre Dame de Namur, the Nation's 7th ranked team, scored three goals in a 12 minute first half span to beat Holy Names 3-1 in a rematch of last season's semi-final playoff game.  In that game Notre Dame demolished the Lady Hawks 10-0.  Holy Names held the high powered Argo's scoreless for the first 25 minutes before the flood gates opened.  Yang Zhou scored first at the 25:28 mark followed by Marisa Zambetti's goal in the 36th minute.  Less than a minute later, Davidson completed the Argonaut scoring as she converted a perfect corner kick from Zhou in the games 37th minute.  Notre Dame held that 3-0 lead for the remainder of the half and nearly the entire game before the Lady Hawks' Roccio Ferree scored a goal with less than a minute remaining.  Notre Dame improves to 9-1-3 and 2-0 in conference while Holy Names dropps to 2-6-2 and 0-2 in Cal Pac play.

Holy Names travels to Redding, CA on Tuesday to take on Simpson University.  Game time is set for 4:00PM.

Menlo Downs the Hawks Twice in a Week

Holy Names Falls 2-0

Atherton, CA - Holy Names Women's Soccer lost to the Menlo College Oaks for the second time in a seven day span Monday, this time by the score of 2-0.  Last Monday it took overtime for the Oaks to pull out the 2-1 win.

Holy Names gave up a quick goal to Menlo's Ja'Net Lawrence just 4:21 into the game and never fully recovered.  Laurin Daniels added the clincher in the 61st minute as she beat Hawk keeper Carlee Stinton one on one for the goal.  Despite giving up two goals, Stinton continued her strong play in the net recording 8 saves in the game.  The Hawks offense however could only muster four shots on goal.

Lady Hawks Lose Yet Another Heartbreaker

Hayward Scores Lone Goal in First OT

Hayward, CA - The Holy Names Women's Soccer team lost their third straight game by one goal Friday, a 1-0 loss at the hands of the CSU Hayward Pioneers.  Ashley Shadd scored just 3:35 into the first overtime to give her team the win. Holy Names drops to 2-4-2 on the season.  All four losses have been by one goal.  In addition, the Lady Hawks have already played in four over time games, tying twice and losing twice. 

Holy Names travels to Atherton Monday to take on Menlo College.  This will be the second time in a week the two squads will meet.  The game starts at 1:00pm.

OAKS TIE RECORD FOR WINS WITH DOUBLE OT THRILLER

Lawrence Nets Game Winner

 

ATHERTON, Calif. -9/21/04- They may have need additional time, but women's soccer today tied the school record for wins by notching their sixth in a 2-1, double overtime thriller over Holy Names University.

 

The win upped Menlo's record to 6-2-1 in 2004, evening the All-Time record for wins set last season, when the Oaks posted a 6-7-1 mark.   The Hawks of Holy Names University dipped to one game under .500, with their record standing at 2-3-2.

 

Menlo jumped out to an early lead, as Laurin Daniels nailed home her third goal of the season off a cross from Ja'Net Lawrence.   That 1-0 lead appeared to be in safe hands with Menlo goalie Jessica Courson, who was within eleven minutes of her fifth shutout of the season.

 

It was then that the Hawks would deny Courson of that shutout.   From ten yards out, Roccio Feree made good on her fifth shot of the afternoon, as her goal evened the game up at one all, forcing what would be a double overtime contest.

 

Lawrence made sure the Oaks would not claim their second tie of the year, as she nailed home the game winner less than two minutes before the end of the second overtime period into the bottom left hand corner of the goal, on an assist from Joyce O'Leary.

Stinton Named Cal Pac Player of the Week

In addition to being named the Holy Names University Athlete of the Week, freshman keeper Carlee Stinton today was named the California Pacific Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week for her efforts in a 1-0 loss to #16 Westmont College.  Stinton allowed just one goal in her 90 minutes of work and saved 14 of the 18 shots on goal.  Included in those saves were two spectacular diving stops in the final ten minutes of action as Holy Names held on and tried to make a push.

Defending Champ Nips the Hawks

#16 Westmont Hangs on for 1-0 Win

 

Oakland, CA - The three-time defending NAIA National Champion Westmont College Warriors scored early and hung on for a 1-0 win over the Holy Names University women's soccer team.   Westmont, currently ranked #16 in the latest NAIA poll, took a 1-0 lead in the 16 the minute when Anna Gropp scored on a pass from teammate Kristi Peich.  

 

Holy Names held off numerous Warrior scoring opportunities as keeper Carlee Stinton recorded 14 saves including two spectacular diving grabs as the games wound down.   Holy Names however could not get the ball in the net to even it up and now stand at 2-2-2 on the young season.  

 

Westmont out shot Holy Names 26 to 6 in the win.

Women's Soccer Wins Second in a Row

Hawks Gear up for #16 Westmont

Holy Names Women's Soccer beat conference foe Bethany College in a non-conference matchup Tuesday in Scott's Valley for their 2nd win in a row.  The Hawks followed up there 9-0 drubbing of Mills College with a 4-2 win over the Bruins.  Roccio Ferree knocked in two goals while Jocylyn Doepker added a goal.  The Hawks remaining goal was scored by Betheny as they knocked the ball into their own net.

Holy Names now gears up to host the Nation's National Champion and #16 ranked Westmont College Friday afternoon at CSU Haward.  Westmont has won three consecutive NAIA National Championships and 4 out of the last five.  Match begins at 4:00PM.

Pair Of Hawk Squads Play To 2-2 Tie

ATHERTON, CA -9/4/04- In a tale of two halves, Christian Heritage scored two first half goals before Holy Names scored two in the second as the two teams played to a 2-2 tie today in Hayward.

 

In the first half, Christian Heritage received goals from Michelle Fry and Melissa Miller.   The designated home team, Christian Heritage was in control for much of the first half, as they out shot Holy Names 11-8.

 

But the tides turned in the second half, as Holy Names increased pressure within Christian Heritage territory for much of the half.   Holy Names got goals from Roxanna Avila and Daysi Ruiz, the last of which tied the game up at two all.

August 5, 2004 - Women's Soccer Schedule Released!

The 2004 Women's Soccer Schedule was released today.  Highlights on the schedule include a round robin tournament at Dominican University to open the season and a September 17 date with Westmont College, the 3-time defending NAIA National Champion.  View full schedule here.

Holy Names University Director of Athletics Lance Thompson is pleased to announce the hiring of Orlando Cervantes as the second Head Coach for Women's Soccer in the school's history.  Orlando brings a wealth of experience to HNU, having served on the coaching staffs of San Jose State University and UC Santa Cruz.
