Lady Hawks Finish on Upswing
Beat Maritime, Pacific Union
While they won't be advancing to any kind of post season, Holy Names Women's Volleyball finished their season on a nice three game win streak following a non conference win over Embry Riddle and 3-0 sweeps of conference foes CSU Maritime and Pacific Union College over the weekend. Just this year the Cal Pac volleyball coaches voted to move to double round robin play and eliminated the Cal Pac tournament. The regular season champion moves on automatically to the NAIA Region II Tournament.
Holy Names finishes the year with a 15-16 record overall including a 12-6 record in conference play. Coach Erika Rinset returns all 8 players on the roster lead by juniors Therese Slade, Abra Amwake and Rebekah Hartkopf.

Beat Embry Riddle 3-1
Holy Names Women's Volleyball returned to their winning ways with a 3-1 non-conference win over visiting Embry Riddle. Holy Names dropped the first game 24-30 but rebounded to sweep the next three by the scores of 30-28, 30-20 and 30-27. Rachel Anema and Abra Amwake each recorded 12 kills apiece while Therese Slade notched 11 kills, 2 aces and 20 digs. Setter Brittany Woodsmall dished out 48 assists and libero Colleen Boston recorded 29 digs for the Lady Hawks.

Improve to 10-6 in Cal Pac
Oakland, CA - Holy Names bounced back into the win column Tuesday with a decisive 30-11, 30-15, 30-17 win over Mills College. Holy Names improves to 12-15 overall including 10-6 in conference matches. Rachel Anema recorded 8 kills, 2 aces and 7 blocks in the win while teammate Abra Amwake chipped in 8 kills, 6 aces and 3 digs.

Holy Names Loses 3-0
Notre Dame de Namur made quick work of the Hawks Saturday night, sweeping Holy Names in three straight by the scores of 30-28, 30-22 and 30-26. Holy Names battled in each game but came away just short each time. Notre Dame improves to 13-1 in Cal Pac play while Holy Names drops to 9-6.

Dominican Comes From Behind For 3-2 Win
Oakland , CA - Long time rivals Holy Names and Dominican University battled for five games before a raucous crowd in a packed Tobin Gymnasium Friday night with Dominican pulling it out in dramatic fashion and winning 3-2. After losing the first game 30-23, Holy Names swept through games 2 and 3, winning by the scores 30-21 and 30-15. Game three was a nail biter with the Penguins prevailing 30-27. Both teams found themselves tied 13 times and no lead was bigger than 3. Dominican used their momentum to grab game five 15-9 to take the match.
Junior Therese Slade recorded 23 kills, 13 digs and 2 blocks in the loss while Jessica Woodall led the Dominican charge notching 12 kills and 19 digs. Holy Names drops to 9-5 in Cal Pac play while Dominican improves to 10-3 with the win.

Holy Names Beats Bethany 3-1
Oakland, CA - Holy Names University Women's Volleyball beat the visiting Bethany College Bruins by the scores of 24-30, 30-24, 30-22, 30-24 Saturday night in a raucous Tobin Gymnasium. After losing the first game Holy Names swept the next 3 in decisive fashion to improve to 9-4 in Cal Pac play, rebounding from a 3-0 loss at the hands of undefeated Menlo College last night.
Holy Names was led by juniors Abra Amwake and Therese Slade who combined for 40 kills, 7 service aces and 32 digs. Setter Brittany Woodsmall added 42 assists while libero Colleen Boston recorded 27 digs. Katie Meledy recorded 8 kills and 22 digs in the loss. Holy Names is next in action next weekend as the host rivals Dominican University and Notre Dame de Namur University on back to back nights

Holy Names Beats Simpson 3-0
Oakland, CA - Holy Names University won their fifth consecutive match and improved to 8-3 in Cal Pac play with a decisive 30-18, 30-12, 30-14. Freshman Jennifer Perkins led the Lady Hawks with 9 kills, 5 aces, 12 digs and 2 blocks while fellow freshman Rachel Anema notched 9 kills, 6 digs and 2 blocks. Simpson meanwhile was led by Sarah Taylor who recorded 7 kills and 5 digs.
Holy Names is next in action against Menlo College on Friday October 22 in Atherton. Menlo is currently undefeated and sits in first place.

Holy Names Sweeps Maritime 3-0
Oakland , CA - Holy Names University women's volleyball swept CSU Maritime in 30-11, 30-4, 30-4 to improve their record to 6-3 in Cal Pac play. Junior Abra Amwake recorded 19 service aces in the win while Jennifer Perkins hit at a .786 pace recording 11 kills on 14 attempts with no errors. Brittany Woodsmall the Cal Pac's leader in assists per game dished out 26 assists.

Women's Volleyball Downs Pacific Union 3-0
Oakland, CA - Holy names University Women's Volleyball improved to 5-3 in California Pacific Conference play with a convincing 30-12, 30-25, 30-17 win in Tobin Gym Tuesday night. Holy Names got 18 kills from junior Therese Slade while Abra Amwake added 5 kils, 8 service aces and 11 digs. Oakland native and Bishop O'Dowd grad Colleen Boston led the Hawks defense with 21 digs in the three game sweep.
Pacific Union's Tara Higa matched Boston's 21 digs while teammate Kristy Nakamitsu recorded 15 assists and 10 digs. Pacific Union drops to 1-5 in conference play.

Women's Volleyball Sweeps Mills
Oakland, CA - In the battle of Oakland's two women's volleyball programs, Holy Names made quick work of the Visiting Mills College Cyclones winning in three games by the scores of 30-20, 30-10, 30-9. Junior Abra Amwake lead the charge as she recorded 9 kills, 6 service aces and 4 digs. Freshman setter Brittany Woodsmall, last week's Cal Pac Setter of the Week, chipped in with 24 assists, 5 kills and 4 service aces.
Holy Names improves to 4-3 in conference play and will look for their fifth Cal Pac win of the season as they host Pacific Union College Tuesday night, October 5. Start tim eis set for 7:00PM.

Slade Receives Second Player of the Week Award
Therese Slade and Brittany Woodsmall have been named the Cal Pac Player and Setter of the Week respectively for their performances over the weekend. The duo won the awards despite losing tough matches to rivals Dominican University and Notre Dame de Namur University on consecutive nights. For Slade, the only hold over from last year's squad, the honor marks the second time this season she has received the award.
Slade recorded totaled 39 kills, 34 digs and 4 service aces in 9 games on the week. Woodsmall notched 97 assists, 18 digs and 3 service aces n 9 games as well.
Women's Volleyball Drops Two Over the Weekend
Heartbreaker to Dominican Starts it Off
The Holy Names Women's Volleyball team went on the road to take on conference rivals Dominican University and Notre Dame de Namur University and came up just short each night. The Lady Hawks lost a 3-2 thriller to Dominican Friday night, dropping the final three games after jumping out to a 2-0 start. Game three proved critical as the Penguins squeaked it out 30-26 to stay in the match. Dominican went on to win game 4, 30-21 and finished off the comeback with a 15-12 win in game five. Therese Slade led the Lady Hawks with 20 kills, 21 digs and 4 service aces while Brittany Woodsmall added 48 assists and 13 digs in the match.
Saturday night's match provided a rematch of last season's conference championship game as Notre Dame de Namur beat Holy Names to take the title. Saturday night's results proved similar as the Argonauts stopped Holy Names in 4 games, 3-1. Game three again proved critical for the Hawks. After splitting the first two games, Holy Names lost a classic battle in game three 32-30. Notre Dame finished off the Hawks in game four 30-21. Slade again provided the offense as she recorded 19 kills. Rachel Anema added 12 kills while Abra Amwake notched 10 kills, 20 digs and 2 service aces.
The Lady Hawks are next in action Saturday, October 2 when they take on Mills College in the comfy confines of Tobin Gymnasium. The Match will start at 7:00PM.

Scott's Valley, CA - Holy Names University women's volleyball bounced back from a 3-1 loss to Menlo College Friday night to beat Beathany College 3-2 in Scott;s Valley Saturday. After dropping game one 30-19 the Lady Hawks bounced back and outlasted Bethany, winning game five 15-13. Brittney Woodsmall dished out 44 assists while Abra Amwake recorded 14 kills, 24 digs and 4 service aces. Rachel Anema continued her steady play with 14 kills, 3 aces, 12 digs and 4 blocks.
Menlo Oaks Knock Off Holy Names
Hawks Comeback Falls Short
Oakland , CA - Visiting Menlo College jumped out to a 2-0 lead against the host Hawks with scores of 30-22 and 30-21 in the first two games. Holy names stormed back to take game three 30-27 and held a 25-20 lead in game four before Menlo put it together and blew by Holy Names to take game four 30-28 and the match 3-1.
Menlo was led by Sanoe' Eselu and Kari Shimomura who recorded 16 and 17 kills respectively. Alyssa Chang dished out 31 assists while Christa Hewitt recorded 29 digs. Holy Names meanwhile was led by junior Abra Amwake who recorded 9 kills, 15 set assists and 25 digs. Therese Slade, the Cal Pac's reigning Player of the Week chipped in 12 kills and 14 digs while freshman Rachel Anema recorded 15 kills, 11 digs and 4 blocks in the loss.
Menlo remains perfect in Cal Pac play at 3-0 while Holy Names drops to 2-1. The Hawks travel to Bethany College tomorrow in Scott's Valley.
Slade Named Cal Pac Player of the Week
Junior Leads Team to a 2-0 Week
In addition to being named the Holy Names Athlete of the Week, junior outside hitter Therese Slade was named the California Pacific Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the Week. Slade helped her teammates win both their matches on the week, both 3-0 sweeps of conference opponents William Jessup University and Simpson University. Slade recorded 26 kills, 23 digs and 6 service aces in 6 games on the week while hitting at a .400 clip.

Holy Names Improves to 2-5
Oakland, CA - Holy Names University, playing their sixth match in five days, rebounded from a 30-28 first game loss to to beat visiting CSU Monterey Bay 3-1. Holy Names won in thrilling fashion with scores of 30-27, 33-31 and 30-27 to secure their second victory of the young season. Holy Names was led by juniors Therese Slade and Abra Amwake in the win. Slade recorded 19 kills, 26 digs and 4 blocks while Amwake added 9 kills, 26 assists and 19 digs.
Monterey Bay meanwhile drops to 1-4 on the season. Lindsay Molinaro, Christine Ricketts and Brittany Etchings each recorded 10 kills to lead the Otters while Frani Peyton notched 31 digs.
Holy Names is next in action at the Concordia University-Irvine Labor Day Volleyball Festival.

Hustlin' Owls Outlast the Scrappy Hawks
OIT Wins in 5
Oakland, CA - The Oregon Tech Hustlin' Owls defeated Holy Names University in a well played, hard fought 5 game match in Tobin Gymnasium Sunday night. OIT jumped out and grabbed the first game 30-28 before Holy Names rebounded to take the second 30-25. Tech bounced back in game three with a fairly easy 30-18 win but could not finish the scrappy Hawks in game four as Holy Names won 30-26. Game five however belonged to the Oregon squad as they won 15-7.
Oregon Tech was led by junior Melissa Frank who recorded 14 kills on 21 attempts to go with 3 blocks. Sophomore setter Megan Albertson added 43 assists and 7 kills.
Holy Names, with just one returning player on their 8-woman squad, drops to 1-4 on the young season. Freshman Rachel Anema played the best match of her young career as she led the way with 18 kills and 2 service aces while hitting at a .444 clip. Junior Therese Slade, a 2003 Honorable Mention All-Cal Pac selection, chipped in 12 kills and 11 digs.
Holy Names Does Battle in the Otter Classic
Hawks Go 1-3 in Tournament
Seaside, CA - The Holy Names Women's Volleyball team returned home from the CSU Monterey Bay Otter Classic with just a 1-3 record but gained a lot of respect in the process. Holy Names' roster boasts just 8 players and includes just one returning player, junior Therese Slade. The Hawks played with just 7 players for much of the tournament due to an injury.
Holy Names beat UC Santa Cruz 3-2 to win their first game of the weekend. Slade led the way with 31 kills on 63 attempts, hitting at a .413 clip and added 13 digs. Later that same afternoon, the Hawks lost a tough match to a good Vanguard University team. After winning the first game 30-26 Holy Names succumbed in the next three, losing 30-22, 30-26, 30-22. Slade again led the way with 18 kills while junior Abra Amwake added 38 assists and 18 digs.
Saturday would not go as well for the Hawks, fighting fatigue and injury, they lost both matches in straight sets yet were never out of any game. Holy Names lost to Sonoma State in the morning match by the scores of 30-21, 30-20, 30-21. Junior Rebekah Hartkopf recorded 11 kills, 2 aces and 8 digs in the loss. The afternoon match was a little closer but produced the same results as Holy Names took on Northwest Nazarene, a NCAA Div. II school from Idaho. Slade recorded 13 kills and Colleen Boston added 14 digs as the Hawks lost by the scores of 30-22, 30-24, 30-22.
August 24, 2004 - Warriors Topple the Hawks
Holy Names Drops Season Opener
Oakland, CA - Visiting Westmont College bounced back from an early 1-0 deficit to hand Holy Names a 3-1 loss in the season opener for both squads. Holy Names jumped out strong and grabbed the first game 30-22. Westmont responded by squeaking by the Hawks in each of the next three games 30-28, 30-27 and 31-29 for the victory. Westmont was led by sophomore Kelsey Voetman who recorded 24 kills and 17 digs. Junior setter Amber Donovan dished out 44 assists in the win.
Holy Names meanwhile looked impressive but came up just short in it's first match of the year. The Hawks have five freshmen and no seniors on their 8-man roster and return just one player from last year's squad, junior outside hitter Therese Slade. Slade led the way for Coach Erika Rinset's team recording 12 kills and 20 digs on the day. Abra Amwake added 16 kills and 17 digs while junior setter Brittney Woodsmall chipped in 39 assists and 15 digs.
Holy Names will next be in action at the CSU Monterey Bay Otter Classic August 27 th and 28 th .
