, 2007 Waipahu High School
Star Inks National Letter of Intent with HNU Donley helped lead the
Marauders to there first post season play in six years.
Oakland, CA – Holy Names University Men's Basketball
Coach Dennis Jones announced that Waipahu High School standout Robert
Donley has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Holy Names
University, he will join the Hawks for the 2007-2008 season.
Donley signed his letter of intent with support from his parents,
Robert and Taisea Donley and surrounded by friends and family at his
home in Waipahu, Hawaii. He began playing basketball as a 7th grader
at Grace Christian Academy, transferred to Waipahu High prior to his
Junior year and as a Senior, the 6’1” guard helped lead the Marauders
to there first post season appearance in 6 seasons. Forced to play
the “4” or forward position because of a lack of size, Donley excelled,
averaging 16 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists per game, including
a season high 27 points against Waialua High School. For his efforts
on the floor, Donley was voted the Oahu Interscholastic Association
White Western Division Player of the Year through a vote of league
coaches.
Donley also excelled in track and field, his hard work helped him
to the 2007 Hawaii State Championship in the triple jump. He was honored
this past spring as 2006-2007 “Mr. Marauder,” as Waipahu High School’s
most outstanding male athlete. Marauder basketball coach Abe Villanueva
praised Donley; “in a society of ‘I’ students and ‘me’ players, Robert
is somewhat of a throwback to the ‘old school’ student athlete. He
appears to be quiet and reserved, but, fights like a tiger in practice
and games.”
HNU Coach Dennis Jones had these comments. “Robert is an extremely
coachable individual, who fits our system very well; He can score
in the paint as well as from the perimeter and has the ability to
create opportunities for others. I look forward to seeing his guard
skills become more polished as he has more opportunity to play his
natural position.”
Holy Names University has won the last two California Pacific Conference
Tournaments, earning automatic bids to the 2006 and 2007 NAIA II National
Tournaments. The 2007 season marked the first time in Men's Basketball
history that the team won the regular season and conference tournament
title in the same year. |
