Another Kanno to Join HNU Hawks for '07-'08 Season

Mililani, HI Holy Names University Men's Basketball Coach Dennis Jones announced that Mililani High School point guard Nick Kanno has signed a letter of intent to play for the Hawks next season.

Kanno signed his letter of intent on the Mililani High School campus, with family and friends in attendance. In two years as Mililani's point guard, the 6'0” Kanno led the Trojan's to a 41-11 overall record including a perfect 22-0 in league play and back to back OIA West Division Championships. He averaged 8.5 points, 8 assists and 4 steals per game in his senior season.

Nick is the youngest of the three Kanno brothers who have been running the point for Mililani High School since 2003. “We are very excited to add Nick to our roster. He comes from a great family and basketball background. He is a competitor and does not back down from any challenge,” said Coach Jones. “I think that Nick will thrive in our system, he will be given more opportunities to make plays in our up and down style of play.”

It was unseeded Holy Names who jumped out to the early lead in the first half behind 14 first half points by Nick Stephens. The Hawks led 34-24 with five minutes to go in the half before a late Northwest run cut the deficit to three, 39-42, by halftime. Holy Names continued to lead in the second half until a three pointer by Eagle forward Kendrick Holley tied the game at 51. Northwest then took control of the game, leading by as much as 12 at several different points during the second half, while HNU went cold from the floor.

Balance was a key for Northwest, as five players scored in double figures. Chris Keeler led the Eagles with 17 points, all in the first half. The senior guard made 5-10 three point baskets and also grabbed four rebounds. Kendrick Holley and Stephen Ishmael netted 14 each and Morgan Axton (13) and Aaron Sawyer (12) were also in double digits. Stephens nailed back-to-back three pointers at the end of the half to send Holy Names into the locker-room at the half with a 51-19 lead. Simpson slowly but persistently cut the lead to14 points in the second half but was unable to get out of the hole they dug for themselves in the first half.

Julius Cumlat and Cotton each finished the night with 10 points, with Cotton also pulling down 6 rebounds, and Cumlat dishing out a game-high 7 assists. Holy Names Advances to Tournament Championship for Second Straight Season

Hayward, CA - The #1 Holy Names Hawks held on for a 78-74 victory over #4 Menlo College in the California Pacific Conference Tournament semi-finals on Friday night in Hayward. The Hawks, ranked #18 in NAIA Division II, shot .500 from the field to improve to 20-11 overall, 14-2 Cal Pac, and 1-0 in Tournament play, while Menlo end its season with a 15-12/9-7/1-1 record.

The game was intense from the start with Menlo scoring first, followed shortly by a double technical call on HNU's Hartman and Menlo's Torres. HNU stretched the lead to 37-27 with 2:30 to go in the first half. A buzzer beating three-pointer by Cobb at the end of the first half trimmed HNU's lead to 43-34. As a team, the Hawks shot 10-of-12 from behind the three-point line in the first half. Menlo cut the lead to five in the second half but scored only two points in six minutes. Hartman sank a shot from the short corner with just over 10 minutes to play to push the lead to 13. Menlo's Bryon Wesley sank a three pointer with 6.1 seconds remaining but a pair of Troy Cotton free throws sealed the game for the Hawks.

"We knew we needed to stay out of foul trouble and play more man defense to get Menlo out of their rhythm," said Holy Names head coach Dennis Jones. "This has been our goal all year. We need to show up to play tomorrow."

HNU's Josh Dozier led the way with 15 points and seven rebounds for the Hawks. Marshall Hartman and Nick Stephens each sank 14 points apiece. Troy Cotton contributed 13 points on 8-of-10 free throw shooting. Sean Palmer nailed three three-pointers to round out the top scorers with 11. The Hawks will face the Simpson University Red Hawks in the Cal Pac Tournament Championship tomorrow. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at CSU East Bay's Pioneer Gym. The winner will advance to the NAIA Division II National Championships.

Holy Names University Hawks Break Into Top 25, Take Cal Pac Conference

Oakland, CA - Things were great for the Holy Names University Hawks men's basketball team. They had made a NAIA National Tournament appearance the previous year and the '06-'07 season looked bright. The Hawks were ranked # 9 in the NAIA preseason poll. This was the highest ranking they ever had and the first time they had broken the top ten. Then the season began and the Hawks faced a tough schedule. Playing a preconference schedule against NCAA Division I and II powers like Santa Clara and Chaminade, NAIA Division I teams, including playing #9 San Diego Christian twice, the Hawks posted a disappointing 3-8 record before the first conference game and 3-10 after opening play versus two conference competitors.

On December 13th, before the next conference game, Coach Dennis Jones talked with his team about what was happening with the season, asking his players where and how the team thought the season should go. Coach Jones pulled out a jersey from the previous year worn by a 2006 National Tournament competitor and cut the bottom from the jersey asking his athletes to write on the strips given to them with words of meaning or motivation as they moved forward into the season. On the left shoulder the date (12-13-06) and current record (3-10) was noted, while on the right shoulder the date of the last regular season game was written (2-17-07). The final record for the season was left open, to be added later. The team then went into the remainder of the season one game at a time, writing a word or phrase on the jersey for each game played. This had been a season of transformation and redemption for the Hawks. The preseason confidence in the Hawks abilities was not misplaced, just slightly averted before the Hawks themselves realized what was necessary to play basketball the way it could be.

And play they did. Since that night in mid-December the Hawks have only lost one game and that was to a non-conference competitor. The Hawks are undefeated in 2007 and on a 14 game winning streak, having won the California Pacific Conference with a record of 14-2 and 19-11 overall, the first conference basketball title for Holy Names since 2001. The hard work has paid off as evidenced by the NAIA statistical rankings: HNU ranks 2nd in Division II in total rebound defense (26.8), 4th in scoring defense per game (59.67), 6th in scoring margin (17.20), 6th in free throw percentage (.752) and 18th in 3-point field goal percentage (.386).

On February 7th, the Hawks broke back into the top 25 rankings at the 25th spot, having dropped out of the poll after the preseason placement. They rose to 21st on February 14th, and are striving to win the Cal Pac Conference Tournament, scheduled to play as the #1 seed on Friday, February 23, 7 pm, at the host venue, Cal State-East Bay in Hayward. If they win, they will then play Saturday, February 24th, at 7 pm for the Tournament Championship and an automatic bid to return to the NAIA National Basketball Tournament.

Merritt Starter, Robert Christensen, Signs With Holy Names University

Oakland, CA - Holy Names University men's basketball Head Coach Dennis Jones announced that Robert Christensen has signed a letter of
intent to play for HNU beginning with the
2007-2008 season.

Christensen is a 21 year old, 6'3", 175 pound forward from El Centro, California. He is
transferring from Merritt College after having
started for 2 years there. While at Merritt he averaged 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists per game. Merritt Coach Troy Johnson said, "Robert's impact on this year's team was his overall leadership on and off the court. He came to play every game and filled the stat sheet in every category. Rob was just tremendous with his basketball savvy and IQ, which are strengths that will help him at the next level. He also showed poise by keeping the team calm in very adverse situations. Holy Names is the perfect situation for Rob both academically and athletically. I think he'll thrive from his JC experience and figure out how to make his mark when the season begins. The classroom will not be a problem due to his maturity while being at Merritt."

A graduate of Central Union High School, Christensen led his team to become the Imperial Valley League Champions, was voted the league's Most Valuable Player and Player of the Year for 2004. Additionally, Christensen was on the All San Diego 1st Team, the 10th leading scorer in San Diego County and in the top 50 players in Southern California in '04, averaging 21 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists per game.

"We are excited that Rob has decided on HNU, he is a very tough competitor who brings a lot of experience with him," commented Coach Jones. Christensen will be welcomed to HNU in the fall of 2007 as a junior and will be majoring in Biological Sciences.

The game was very physical and more than a few bruises were sustained during the victory. The Hawks led at the half 22-36, but Simpson came out fighting to catch-up. Many players hit the wood or the walls, as play was intense and sometimes desperate for Simpson, especially in the second half as they tried to erase the deficit. HNU held on to the lead throughout the battle of the second half, to win by one point less than the halftime difference of 14, 60-73. Packie Turner Commits to the Hawks for 07-08, Turner Instrumental in Timberwolvers Turnaround

Oakland, CA - The Holy Names University Men's Basketball team welcomed Patrick "Packie" Turner to the Family for the 2007-2008 season. The 6'1" point guard is currently finishing up his senior season at Fort Bragg High School where he has helped guide the Timberwolves to the brink of their second straight NCL I title, Fort Bragg is currently undefeated in League play. Turner has been the starting varsity point guard since his sophomore season, when Fort Bragg went just 5-23. Turner has garnered a knack for winning, and was instrumental bringing Fort Bragg their first league Title since 1992 as a junior, receiving League MVP as well as All Empire honors.

Head Fort Bragg High School Varsity coach Tim Anderson speaks of his point guard; "The reason for our recent success has been Packie's leadership ability. He is not afraid to fail and risk what's on the line, in other words, "take the big shot." Packie's most valuable attribute is his selflessness. He has always thought about team first. As a sophomore he averaged 14 points a game and we went 5-23. As a junior he averaged 13 points a game and we finished 19-10. Now, as a senior, he is averaging 12 points a game and we should win over 20 games. He is, by far, a more skilled player who has the ability to score more points, but is willing to do what it takes for his team to be more successful. He could easily average 18 points a game or more, get more recognition and glory, but that is not what Packie's about. Packie's completeness as a player is another strong point, leading his team in points, assists and steals, he is also our second leading rebounder. He is an amazing teammate and a true pleasure to coach."

Turner will join a Holy Names team currently making a run at its first California Pacific Conference title since 2001. Hawks Head Coach and former Fort Bragg High graduate Dennis Jones calls Turner a "stat sheet stuffer." "Packie does a little of everything on the floor, I think he possesses the unique ability to make the people around him even better."

Turner will be Majoring in International Relations with an emphasis on business.

Cumlat Ties Own Record for Assists in 91-83 Win Over Bethany

Scotts Valley, CA - Julius Cumlat fed his teammates a season and school record 14 assists, tying his own previous mark set last year against Simpson. Cumlat also scored 5 points and 1 steal. This victory puts HNU on top of the Cal Pac Conference at 10-2, 15-11 overall, and riding a 10 game winning streak. Bethany drops to 4-10 Cal Pac, 4-20 overall.

HNU and Bethany were tied at the half 44 all. Bethany had a slight edge statistically but the Hawks pushed that edge and took it away from the Bruins in the second half. With all other stats fairly even, those 12 points from the line were the difference in the win for HNU.
