Tim Hart Named Interim Head Coach for Men's Soccer

Oakland, CA — Holy Names University Director of Athletics, Melanie Gregor, announced today that former Assistant Head Coach to the Men's and Women's teams, Tim Hart, has been names as Interim Head Coach for the Men's Soccer team.

"Tim's experience as a player and assistant head coach for both of the soccer programs here at Holy Names makes him the logical choice as Interim Head Coach.  Hart will lead the men's program after Paul Sapsford stepped down from the head coaching position," said Gregor.

Hart has extensive experience playing in England, as well as holding an English Football Association National Coaching certificate.  He was part of the NAIA National Championship soccer team from the University of the Rio Grande in 2003, before transferring to play goalkeeper at Holy Names in 2004.  Hart is also employed in the Admissions Department and specializes in international recruitment of students, in addition to coaching soccer.

Hart is currently recruiting for the 2008 season.

2007 Cal Pac All-Conference Honors Announced

San Rafael, CA — Led by California Pacific Conference Player of the Year Mustafa Celik, Holy Names University dominated the All-Cal Pac men's soccer All-Conference team by placing nine players on the honor list, Commissioner Don Ott announced.

Celik, a sophomore forward, knocked in 10 goals and added three assists to lead the Hawks to a perfect 7-0-0 league mark. HNU advanced to the regional playoffs with a 13-2-2 overall record and won their first round match 2-1 over Vanguard University.

The Hawks swept all the individual honors as well. HNU's first-year head coach Paul Sapsford earned the vote of his peers as the Coach of the Year. His goalkeeper, junior Andreas Lindstrom, earned top defensive player honors after allowing just two goals in conference play. Lloyd Grist is the league's top freshman with ten goals and three assists.

The California Pacific Conference competes in the NAIA and for men's soccer is composed of Bethany University, CSU Maritime, Dominican University of California, Holy Names University, Menlo College, Pacific Union College, Simpson University, and William Jessup University.

Oakland, CA - HNU was wary of Fresno Pacific University in their season opener this Saturday because FPU missed the NAIA top 25 rankings by one vote. Being on their guard worked out well for HNU as they tied FPU 1-1 in the first half of play, and never allowed FPU to score against them again, even throughout the second half and two additional 10 minute overtimes.

Hawk forward Mustafa Celik scored the lone HNU goal without an assist and off a Sunbird deflection. The FPU Sunbirds scored their only goal on a PK (penalty kick).

HNU goal keeper Andreas Lindstrom had 14 saves and an outstanding defensive performance, so much so that he was nominated for Cal Pac Player of the Week.

Next up for the Hawks is a trip to Oregon for a match against George Fox on Saturday, September 1.
