Hawks Drop Another Match 0-3 to Even Season Record 2-2


Riverside, CA – The HNU Hawks found no relief in Riverside as they lost to Cardinal Stritch of Milwaukee, WI, 28-30, 25-30, 21-30. The loss brings the Hawks season record to 2-2. HNU hit .065 (31-25-93) to Cardinal Stritch Wolves .307 (45-18-88) which was the difference for the match.

Chad Miller logged a match high 9 kills. Riley Tang set for 23 assists and Kevin McColloch had 4 aces, with 6 digs. HNU led the first match by as much as 5, until the Wolves caught up to tie it 20-20. The Hawks scrapped to tie it again at 26, until Stritch sealed it 28-30.

Cardianl Stritch led game two from the beginning and never relinquished it, resulting in a 25-30 loss. The third game saw the Hawks battling theWolves evenly unitl 14-14, when Stritch surged ahead to close out the game 21-30.

HNU has the week off and face the San Jose State club team on Saturday, January 20, at 7pm in San Jose.

#1 Cal Baptist Sweeps Hawks in 3 Games

 

Riverside, CA – It was a tough night on the road for Holy Names Men’s Volleyball in Riverside as the #1 ranked Cal Baptist Lancers handed the Hawks their first defeat of the season, 24-30, 18-30, 25-30. HNU is now 2-1 for the season.

Kevin McCulloch had a match high 14 kills and hit .375 (14-5-24) overall, while Riley Tang provided 26 assists on the night. The first game saw the Lancers chip away at HNU all game long, but the Hawks fought back to within one, 24-25, when a Hawks service error, and blocks and aces by the Lancers put the game away.

The second game had the Hawks battling to keep up with the Lancers, which they did until the Lancers pulled away and had six unanswered points as the Hawks stalled at 14. The game ended with the Hawks posting a .038 (10-9-26) hitting percentage.

Game three found the Hawks responding to 2 and 3 point spurts by the Lancers which ran past them until they were close at 21-24. The Lancers ended it soon after 25-30.

The Hawks meet Cardinal Stritch of Milwaukee, WI, at 1pm on Saturday, January 13, in Riverside for the first match of triangular play, with Stritch meeting Cal Baptist in the 7pm match.

Hawks Volleyball Defeats Stevens Institute in 5 Games

 

HNU Volleyball bumped their win record to 2-0 Thursday night against Stevens Institute of Technology from Hoboken, NJ, beating the Ducks 3-2 (28-30, 30- 21, 25-30, 31-29, 15-13).

Sophomore middle blocker Drew McDowell (Los Gatos, Calif.) led the Hawks with a match-high .458 hitting percentage, 14 kills and six blocks. Sophomore setter Riley Tang (Honolulu, Hawaii) totaled a match-high 57 assists and collected eight digs. Senior outside hitter Erik Joller (San Diego, Calif.) led Holy Names with 11 digs and 18 kills. He also hit .308 and picked up five blocks.

Stevens Senior setter/outside hitter Michael Schulte (San Bernardino, Calif.) totaled a team-high 45 assists while Sophomore outside hitter Tom Bochicchio (Saint James, N.Y.) chipped in with a team-high 18 kills and added seven digs and four blocks. Junior outside hitter/libero Brian Carlson (West Seneca, N.Y.) collected 10 digs, and Sophomore middle hitter Will Foley (Clifton Park, N.Y.) totaled a team-high nine blocks.

Holy Names out-hit Stevens by a small margin of .169 (70-41-172) to .118 (53-35-152) in the match. Next up for the Hawks is Cal Baptist on Friday, January 12th, in Riverside, as well as, Cardinal Stritch University of Milwaukee, WI, on Saturday, January 13th, also being played in Riverside.

Holy Names Men’s Volleyball Opens with 3-2 Win over D’Youville College Spartans

 

Hawks Men’s Volleyball opened their season winning over a tenacious D’Youville College team from Buffalo, NY, on Wednesday night at Tobin Gym. HNU won 3 games, while D’Youville won 2 games (30-32, 32-30, 30-19, 27-30, 16-14).

Erik Joller and Chad Miller each had 16 kills, while Kevin McCulloch tied Drew McDowell with 13 kills, and McDowell adding a match-high hitting percentage of .476, 2 aces and 9 blocks. McCulloch also tied libero DJ Kaanaana defensively at 13 digs, with Joller hot on their heels with 12 digs. Riley Tang posted 49 assists and Miller served up 8 aces.

The D’Youville Spartans did not go down in defeat quietly. They scrapped for every ball and Holy Names won or lost three of the five games by a margin of 2 points.

HNU Tabs McCreary to Lead Volleyball Programs

 

The Holy Names University Athletic Department is pleased to announce the hiring of Allen McCreary as the Head Coach of both the Men's and Women's Volleyball programs at HNU. Coach McCreary comes to Holy Names from Merced College where he served as an assistant with the women's program since 2004. 

Prior to his stint at Merced, McCreary served as the Head Volleyball Coach at Hughson High School in Hughson, CA from 1999 to 2004.  McCreary also has extensive club experience having spent 6 year as the Club Director and Coach of Central Valley Juniors in Hughson and is currently the Assistant Director and 17U Coach with the Extreme Volleyball Club out of Modesto, CA.

McCreary replaces Erika Rinset on the women's side and Aaron Gill on the men's.  Rinset departs as the winningest coach in program history recording 50 wins over her three year stint and lead the Lady Hawks to the Cal Pac Championship match during her first year.

Gill departs after just one season at the helm of the program he started.  The Hawks produced a solid inaugural season spending some time ranked in the NAIA's Top 10.

Hawks Come Up Short vs Nation's Elite

Holy Names University men's volleyball returned from their Southern California swing with 3 hard fought losses to ranked NAIA opponents.  Holy Names leapt onto the map last week as they found themselves ranked #9 in the country in just their first year of competition.  The Hawks had knocked off #7 Newman the week before, helping them to their first ranking in the program's short history.

Holy Names faced #6 Hope International on back to back nights Thursday and Friday and came away with two 3-1 losses.  The first night Hope jumped out quickly winning the first two games by identical 30-20 scores.  The Hawks clawed back into it with a 30-28 win in game three before succumbing 30-21 in the fourth.  Kevin McColloch led the Hawks with 19 kills on the night while Treston Yasso dished out 42 assists. McColloch added 20 kills and 11 digs the next night as Holy Names proved to be a much tougher out the second time around.  The Hawks grabbed the first game 31-29 before being edged in each of the next three by the scores of 30-24, 30-24 and 30-27.  Erik Joller led the way with 21 kills while Tyler Janssen added 9 kills, 11 digs, 2 aces and 3 solo blocks.

Saturday night head coach Aaron Gill and his squad faced the the #1 team in the nation as well as the defending national champion in Cal Baptist University.  The Lancers proved themselves worthy of their ranking by sweeping the Hawks 30-15, 30-25, 30-15.  Yasso recorded 25 assists as no Hawk reached double digits in kills.  Holy Names finishes off their season with matches vs UC Davis and Cal Berkeley, both officially club teams.  Check the season schedule for match dates and times.

Hawks Appear in Nation's Top 10

Men's Volleyball Ranked #9

The Holy Names men's volleyball program, in just their first year of competition, has broken into the Nation's Top 10 as released by the AVCA web site today.  Holy Names appears in the #9 slot of the weekly Top 10, voted on by coaches around the country.  Holy Names has played five of the teams appearing in the Top 10 culminating with a 3-1 win over #6 Newman University in Tobin Gym last week.  Holy Names has also played #1 Lindenwood, #4 Missouri Baptist, #5 Park and #7 Hope International.  The Hawk travel south this weekend to take on Hope International on back to back nights before taking on #1 ranked and defending national champion California Baptist on Saturday, March 25 in Riverside, CA.

Holy Names Knocks Off #7 Newman

Holy Names men's volleyball put an exclamation point on their all ready impressive inaugural season by knocking off the Nation's 7th ranked Newman University last night in a raucous Tobin Gymnasium.  The Hawks dropped the first game 25-30 before taking control of the match and winning three straight by the scores of 30-24, 30-26 and 34-32 for a 3-1 win.  Juniors Erik Joller and Kevin McColloch led the way with 23 and 20 kills respectively while Treston Yasso recorded 57 assits, 3 aces and 6 digs in the win.  Holy Names improved to 15-6 overall on the season.

Hawks Tangle With Nation's Best

The Holy Names Men's Volleyball Program traveled to Missouri this past weekend for an opportunity to measure themselves against some of the Nation's top ranked teams as the took part in the 2006 Lindenwood Tournament.  While they came away winless, the first year program got a taste of high caliber national competition as they dropped matches to #4 Park University (3-1), #5 Misourri Baptist University (3-1) and #1 Lindenwood University (3-0) over the course of the two day tournament. 

Lindenwood is tied for the Nation's top spot with California Baptist.  Holy Names travels to take on Cal Baptist on March 23.

Holy Names Wins Far Westerns Tournament

Men Finish First in Field of 20

The Holy Names men's volleyball team had an immpressive showing at the Far Western Men's Volleyball tournament hosted by UC Davis.  Holy Names ran through the tournament with an 8-1 record finishing first among the 20 team field.  The Hawks only blemish on the weekend was a 2-0 loss to the University of Oregon on Saturday.  Holy Names recovered on Sunday beating Sacramento State on the tournament's quarter finals, UCLA in the semi finals and sweeping Santa Clara in the tournament championship match.

Men's Volleyball Jumps Out to 5-0 Start

Beat D-III Powers Medaille, Stevens Tech

In just it's first season of intercollegiate competition the Holy Names Men's Volleyball program has jumped out to a perfect 5-0 start on the year.  Led by head coach Aaron Gill the Hawks defeated NCAA D-III powers Medaille College and Stevens Institute of Technology on back to back nights for a 2-0 start in the first two matches in the program's history.  They followed that up with wins over NCAA D-I club teams from San Jose State, UC Davis and UC Berkeley. 

“I think the two wins against nationally ranked D-III schools were a great way for this program to start.  Everyone stepped up for this tremendous challenge and we were able to fight for the wins, " said Gill.

"To start 5-0 in the first year of this program is a testament to the hard work these guys put in in the off-season.  We've only just begun, though, we are looking to compete with every opponent we play this season.”

In their inaugural match Holy Names defeated Stevens Tech, ranked #6 on the D-III preseason poll, in a 3-2 thriller by the scores of 30-21, 22-30, 32-30, 17-30 and 19-17.  Kevin McColloch recorded a match high 22 kills for the Hawks while Erik Joller added 18 kills, 4 aces and 7 digs.  Setter Treston Yasso dished out 55 assists.  Joller and McColloch were again the story against preseason #8 Medaille the next night with 20 and 15 kills respectively.  They each recorded a match high 3 aces while Yasso notched 44 assists and 9 digs.  Stevens Tech and Medaille are currently ranked #7 and #10 in the nation respectively.

The first year program disposed of their next two opponents in quick fashion with 3-0 sweeps.  Joller led the Hawks to a 30-19, 30-20, 30-24 win over San Jose State with 11 kills, 7 aces and 6 digs.  Riley Tang added 12 digs from the libero position.  In a 31-29, 30-28, 30-26 win over UC Berkeley Riley again had double digit digs with 14 and recorded a season high 20 in the Hawks 3-1 win over UC Davis. 

Holy Names is next in action this Wednesday, February 9 as they host Pacific Union College.  The match is set to begin at 7:00PM. 

 

 

Holy Names Adds Men's Volleyball

Gill Chosen as Head Coach

Holy Names Athletic Director Lance Thompson officially announced the addition of Men's Volleyball to the Holy Names Athletic Department for the 2005-2006 year.  Men's Volleyball will compete in the NAIA as an Independent and will play a schedule of NAIA and NCAA schools from nearly every division during the spring of 2006.

Aaron Gill, a former assistant with the Holy Names women's volleyball program and currently the school's Athletic Trainer, has been hired to start up and coach the men's program.
