Lady Hawks Return to Winning Ways Against Wm. Jessup, 56-71

Oakland, CA – HNU’s women’s basketball team is back on track, as evidenced by the trouncing they gave the WJU Warriors on Thursday night. The Hawks are now 9-1 in Cal Pac conference play and 12-12 overall. While Jessup (5-5 Ca Pac, 8-14 overall) made an attempt to rally in the second half, HNU met the challenge with a push of their own, leading by as much as 22 points at times.

Jessup’s Christina Kidd had a game-high 17 points and 4 rebounds, with Amanda Gillming and Megan Priebe contributing 13 and 11 points, respectively. Warrior Hayleigh Thomson pulled down 7 rebounds, but was restricted to only 2 points for the evening.

The first half saw the Hawks with a clear edge in rebounding (25 to 15), invaluable points off the bench and more shots at the bucket. That trend continued throughout the second half as HNU concluded the night grabbing almost three times the number of offensive rebounds as the Warriors (17 to 6). Jessup made their move to reduce the deficit but Martha Spivey scored a team-high 15 points and a double-double with 14 rebounds. Gelater Fullwood offered 12 points and 6 rebounds, while Angelita Hutton gave 11 points and 3 steals in the effort. Hawk substitutes outscored Jessup’s 22-6.

A day after etching its name in the record books as a participant in the highest-scoring women’s basketball game in NAIA history, California Baptist nearly hit the century mark again in a 95-84 victory over Holy Names in the 7th Annual GSAC Challenge hosted by Azusa Pacific.

Sophomore guard Nicole Davis, who set the GSAC Challenge single-game scoring record with 42 points in yesterday’s win, tossed in another 23 points to set the tournament scoring record at 65 points, eclipsing Brittany Smart’s 63-point performance for 2005 participant Cedarville (Ohio). Davis added 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals for the Lancers, who needed another second-half comeback to pull off the win.

With California Baptist leading 64-53 with 13:34 to play in the game, Holy Names senior guard Jennifer Hardin knocked down a 3-pointer that sparked a 13-0 run that gave the Hawks a 66-64 lead with 9:53 remaining. However, Davis answered with a 3-pointer of her own, and junior forward Erin Greenberg drained a pair of her GSAC Challenge single-game record 8 3-pointers to cap the 12-1 run and give California Baptist the lead for good at 76-67 with 7:16 to play.

Greenberg finished with a game-high 24 points, and freshman guard Brandie McCann added 23 points, 10 assists and a game-high 4 steals. McCann made 16-of-16 free throws in the game, just 1 short of the GSAC Challenge single-game record of 17, and, with her 7-of-8 performance from the line in yesterday’s win, came up 2 free throws short of the tournament record of 25 free throws. After making her final 3 free throws yesterday, McCann sank all 16 attempts from the charity stripe to give her a current streak of 19 successful free throws.

Holy Names jumped out to a 19-5 lead in the first 5 minutes of the game, but California Baptist responded with a 23-6 run to take a 28-25 lead with 8:05 to play in the opening half. The Lancers scored 15 of the half’s final 22 points to take a 53-40 halftime lead. Holy Names junior guard Angelita Hutton made a pair of 3-pointers in the Hawks’ game-opening run, and she finished with a team-high 22 points. Senior center Gelater Fullwood finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds, and junior forward Martha Spivey posted a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double to go with a pair of blocks.

The Hawks used a 7-0 run in which Angela Anthony scored 5 of her 9 first-half points to give Holy Names a 24-20 lead with 4 minutes left in the half.
