Penguins Sweep Lady Hawks
HNU Drops to 7-5
San Rafael, CA - Holy Names lost to rival Dominican University in three straight Friday night to drop to 7-5 in Cal Pac play. Dominican meanwhile improves to 9-1 and remains a game back of Menlo College. Miya Frank recorded a match high 14 kills while Kortney Kuelper notched 28 assists and 15 digs. Colleen Boston chipped in 16 digs in the 30-19, 30-18, 30-26 loss.
Holy Names Beats Mills in Three
Lady Hawks 8-4 in Conference
Holy Names Women's Volleyball swept visiting Mills College 30-10, 30-12, 30-16 to improve to 9-14 overall and 8-4 in Cal Pac play. Miya Frank and Jennifer Perkins each recorded a match high 10 kills. Kortney Kuelper, the reigning Cal Pac Setter of the Week, recorded 26 assists, 6 digs and 5 service aces while defensive specialist Colleen Boston notched 17 digs and 3 aces.
Holy Names is next in action Friday at arch rival Dominican University. The match kicks off at 7:00PM.
Kuelper Named Cal Pac Setter of the Week
HNU Sits at 7-4
Holy Names junior setter Kortney Kuelper was named the Cal Pac Setter of the Week Tuesday. Kuelper recorded 75 assists and 27 digs on the week as Holy Names split a pair of conference matches. The Anchorage native dished out 28 assists in a 3-0 loss to first place Menlo College and 27 assists in a 3-0 win at Bethany. She added 20 assists in a loss to non-conference foe CSU East Bay. Kuelper is currently third in the conference with Assists Per Game (8.8) and Service Aces (.63 per).
Lady Hawks Split Conference Pair
Beat Bethany, Lose To Menlo
Holy Names split a pair of California Pacific Conference volleyball matches over the weekend losing to Cal Pac front runner Menlo College 3-0 on Friday and bouncing back to sweep Bethany on Saturday. Holy Names now sits in third place in conference play at 7-4.
Frank, Boston Grab Cal Pac, Regional Honors
Named Player, Libero of the Week
Sophomore Miya Frank and junior Colleen Boston were named the California Pacific Conference Player and Libero of the Week respectively for their efforts in leading Holy Names to a perfect 3-0 week. In wins over UC Santa Cruz (3-1), William Jessup (3-0) and Simpson (3-2) Frank tallied 48 kills while hitting at a .336 clip. The Honolulu native added 6 service aces and 13 blocks, 7 of them solo.
Boston meanwhile headed up the defense for the Hawks recording an impressive 80 digs (7.3 per) and 7 service aces in her 11 games. In the Hawks 3-2 come from behind win over Simpson the Oakland native notched 47 digs and recorded 5 service aces. In addition, Boston was named the NAIA Region II Libero of the Week for her efforts.
Holy Names Pulls Off Thrilling Comeback
Avenges Earlier Simpson Loss
Oakland, CA - Holy Names University avenged a 3-0 sweep at the hands of Simpson University earlier this season with a 3-2 come from behind win over the visiting Red Hawks. The Hawks were nearly swept again losing the first two games 30-25 and 31-29. The Hawks squeaked out game three with their own 31-29 win and followed that up with a 30-28 game 4 win. In one of the closest and well played matches to date, Holy Names completed the comeback with a 15-13 game five win.
The Hawks improve to 6-3 in Cal Pac play and pulled themselves into a tie with Simpson for third place. Sophomore Miya Frank recorded 20 kills and 4 blocks. Colleen Boston recorded career highs of 47 digs and 5 service aces while setter Kortney Kuelper dished out 51 assists and notched 15 digs.

Take Three Straight From Jessup
Oakland, CA - Holy Names University swept visiting William Jessup University by the scores of 30-16, 30-15, 30-16 to improve to 5-3 in Cal Pac play. Miya Frank led the charge with a match high 16 kills, 3 aces and 3 blocks. Kortney Kuelper notched 24 assists, 4 aces and 9 digs. Becky Mogle recorded 3 kills and 9 digs for William Jessup.
In honor of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness month, Holy Names Athletics and Women's Volleyball designated tonight's event as Breast Cancer Awareness Night donating all the match's proceeds to the Eifoundation in support of breast cancer research. Holy Names hosted a serving competition between games 2 and 3 allowing spectators to donate money and serve with the chance to win a free pizza.
HNU Drops Slugs 3-1
Record First Non-Conference Win
Oakland, CA - Holy Names recorded their first non-conference win of the season with a 3-1 decision over the visiting Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz Wednesday evening. The two teams split the first games 1 and 2 each winning by the score of 30-25. The Hawks took the next two 30-26 and 30-24 to improve to 5-12 on the season. Coach McCreary's young squad showed the experience of a challenging pre-season holding off furious Slug rallies in each of the last two games.
Jennifer Perkins recorded a match high 15 kills on 43 attempts for Holy Names. Teammate Miya Frank was scorching, hitting at a .444 clip recording 12 kills on 27 attempts without an error. The 5-11 sophomore added 2 aces and 6 total blocks, three of them solo. Kortney Kuelper dished out 40 assists while Erica Reed and Colleen Boston notched 21 and 26 digs respectively.
Nicole Payne recorded 12 kills and 12 digs for UCSC who saw 17 players make appearances in the match.
Holy Names Sweeps Pioneers
Improve Cal Pac Mark to 4-3
Angwin, CA - Holy Names swept host Pacific Union 30-17, 30-15, 32-30 to up there conference record to 4-3. Jennifer Perkins and Erica Reed notched 9 and 8 kills respectively to lead the way while Kortney Kuelper dished out 25 assists to go with 8 digs, 3 aces and 3 blocks. Colleen Boston added 4 aces and 14 digs in the win.
Holy Names' next match will be a non-conference affair as the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz come to Oakland next Wednesday October 11th. The match will begin at 7:00PM.
Frank Named Cal Pac Player of the Week
First Selection for Sophomore
Holy Names University sophomore Miya Frank was named the California Pacific Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the Week for her efforts last week. The 5-11 sophomore helped Holy Names to a 1-1 week with a 3-0 win over Mills College and a tough 3-0 loss to Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls, OR. Frank hit at a .303 clip recording 14 kills on just 33 attempts with 4 errors. The Honolulu native added 3 service aces and 9 total blocks in the 6 games. Against Mills, Franked tallied 6 kills on 9 attempts, 2 service aces and 7 blocks.

Lady Hawks Do Battle in Klamath Falls
Klamath Falls, OR - Host Oregon Institute of Technology handed Holy Names it's 12th loss of the year with a 30-23, 30-24, 30-23 win Saturday night. After their long trip into the Evergreen State, and playing without outside hitter Jennifer Perkins, the Lady Hawks would not go away without a fight. HNU battled back from deep early deficits in each game to make them interesting, but could not get over the hump in any, losing all three. OIT was led by Krista Wooley's 17 kills and 10 digs. Holy names got 8 kills from Miya Frank and 7 digs apiece from Kortney Kuelper and Colleen Boston. Kuelper led Holy Names with 25 assists.
Holy Names is next in action Tuesday as they travel to Angwin to take on Cal Pac foe Pacific Union College at 7:00PM.

Even Up Cal Pac Mark
Oakland, CA - Holy Names Women's Volleyball swept fellow Oakland resident Mills College 30-16, 30-22, 30-20 to improve to 3-3 in Cal Pac play Tuesday. The Lady Hawks up their overall record to 3-11 with the decisive win.
Sophomore Miya Frank led the way for Holy Names with 7 kills, 7 total blocks and 2 service aces. Setter Kortney Kuelper notched 18 assists, 3 blocks and 5 aces while junior Colleen Boston recorded a match high 17 digs.
Holy Names travels to Klamath Falls, OR this weekend to take on the Oregon Institute of Technology on Saturday.

Dominican Sweeps Host Hawks
Oakland , CA – Dominican University swept host Holy Names University 30-26, 30-21, 30-24 to improve to 6-3 on the season and remain perfect in Cal Pac play at 4-0. Holy Names drops to 2-3 in conference play with the loss.
DU's Maren Dermody led the way with 16 kills, 6 digs and 6 blocks. Senior Ashley Wells dished out 35 assists to go along with 9 digs, 3 blocks and 4 kills. As a team the Penguins outblocked HNU 7-3 in the match. Erica Reed notched 10 kills and 9 digs while Jennifer Perkins added 9 kills, 11 digs and 3 aces.
Lady Hawks Fly by Bethany
Take 5 Game Thriller
Oakland , CA – Holy Names University came back from a tough loss to the 2-time defending Cal pac champ on Friday to post a thrilling 3-2 win over visiting Bethany University in front of a raucous Tobin Gymnasium crowd. Holy Names dropped the first game 30-25 but stormed back to take games 3 and 4 decisively 30-25 and 30-14. Bethany evened it up at 2-2 with a 30-23 game 4 win. Bethany took a 13-8 lead in the deciding game before the Lady Hawks rallied, tying it up at 13 and winning it 17-15.
Holy Names improves to 2-2 in Cal Pac play while handing Bethany (2-1) their first conference loss. Kateline McQueen recorded 12 kills and 14 digs for the Bruins while setter Katie Perry notched 4 kills, 37 assists and 16 digs. Junior Jennifer Perkins recorded a game high 20 kills to go with 4 aces, 16 digs and 2 blocks. Miya Frank recorded 19 kills while hitting at a .368 clip and added 4 aces and 5 blocks in the win. Setter Kortney Kuelper dished out 47 assists and recorded 14 digs.
Holy Names is next in action September 23rd as they host arch rival Dominican University. Tip off is set for 7:00PM.
Menlo College Clips the Hawks
Defending Champs Win in 4
Oakland , CA - The two time defending Cal Pac Champion Menlo College improved to 2-0 in conference play with a 25-30, 30-17, 30-16, 31-29 win over the host Holy Names Hawks. Holy Names drops to 1-2 in Cal Pac play and will host Bethany University tomorrow night at 7:00PM.
Holy Names jumped out quick on Menlo taking the first game 30-25. The Oaks would show their championship poise as they took the next two games easily before squeaking out the fourth and deciding game for a 3-1 victory. Deborah Bekowies recorded a game high 15 kills for Menlo while Kaela Arnett recorded 13 kills and 25 digs. Holy Names was led by Jennifer Perkins' 13 kills, 12 digs and 2 blocks. Setter Kortney Kuelper notched 35 assists and 13 digs in the loss.
Lady Hawks Split Conference Openers
Notch First Win of the Season
Holy Names University conference opening weekend produced mixed results as the Lady Hawks played on the road on back to back nights beating William Jessup 3-0 and losing to Simpson University 3-0. Holy names cruised to their season's first victory after a brutal non-conference schedule with a 30-21, 30-19, 30-14 win over Jessup on Friday. Sophomore Miya Frank hit at a .667 clip recording 6 kills in 9 attempts and added 5 aces and 2 solo blocks. Setter Kortney Kuelper dished out 22 assists and recorded 6 aces while Myrissa Bynum recorded a match high 11 digs.
The next night saw a similar story with drastically different results as Holy Names made the long trip home from Redding even longer as they dropped the match in three straight by the scores of 30-19, 30-19, 30-21. Simpson improved to 5-0 on the season included 2-0 in Cal Pac play. Jennifer Perkins recorded 6 kills and 7 digs while Frank added 7 kills and 3 aces in the loss.
After 10 straight games on the road Holy Names will make their home debut this weekend as they host Menlo College and Bethany University Friday and Saturday nights respectively. Both matches begin at 7:00PM.
Lady Hawks Face Nation's #1, #2 Teams
Tough Schedule Producing Tough Results
Irvine, CA - The young Holy Names Women's Volleyball squad dropped to 0-8 on the young season after an 0-4 showing in the Crowne Plaza Labor Day Volleyball Festival hosted by Concordia University-Irvine. Holy Names faced four members of the volleyball power house Golden State Athletic Conference over the tournament's two days including the NAIA's top two teams in #1 Cal Baptist University and #2 Fresno Pacific University. Holy Names lost each match in three games however progress is being made.
"Obviously the schedule has not been friendly however it has made us stronger and we are ready for conference", stated head coach Allen McCreary. "We are coming together, these young ladies are showing great motivation and a great attitude. The experience we've gained is invaluable and will continue to assist our team development through out the season."
In addition to Cal Baptist and Fresno the Lady Hawks played Vanguard University in Vanguard's gym and Biola University for the second time in a week. Biola is sitting just outside the NAIA's Top 25 at#27. In all, the Lady Hawks have played an entirely GSAC schedule including four ranked teams and three in the NAIA's Top 10. Holy Names saw #9 Concordia and #14 Azusa Pacific last weekend.
Holy Names opens the real season this weekend as they go on the road to face conference foes in the Cal Pac's opening weekend. They travel to William Jessup University on Friday night and follow that up with a trip to Simpson University the next day. Match times are 7:00pm and 5:00pm respectively.
Rough Start in Fresno
HNU Faces Stiff Competition
Fresno, CA - The Holy Names Women's Volleyball squad returned home from the 23rd Annual Fresno Pacific Invitational with four 3-0 losses against GSAC teams including two ranked in the NAIA Top 25 and one just on the cusp. The Lady Hawks, led by first year Head Coach Allen McCreary, dropped matches to #9 Concordia-Irvine, #14 Azusa Pacific, #27 Biola and unranked Master's College, all members of the NAIA power Golden State Athletic Conference that has produced the last three NAIA National Champions.
The road for McCreary's young squad seems to get tougher, not easier. With no seniors and just three juniors on the roster, the Lady Hawks are getting their experience on the go. Holy Names travels to the 2006 Crowne Plaza Labor Day Festival in Irvine, CA hosted by Concordia University. Holy Names faces another all GSAC tournament schedule. In addition to facing Biola again the Lady Hawks will see unranked Vanguard and the Nation's #1 and #2 teams in Cal Baptist and Fresno Pacific. Cal Baptist is the two-time defending national champion and Fresno won it all in 2003.
HNU Tabs McCreary to Lead Volleyball Programs
The Holy Names University Athletic Department is pleased to announce the hiring of Allen McCreary as the Head Coach of both the Men's and Women's Volleyball programs at HNU. Coach McCreary comes to Holy Names from Merced College where he served as an assistant with the women's program since 2004.
Prior to his stint at Merced, McCreary served as the Head Volleyball Coach at Hughson High School in Hughson, CA from 1999 to 2004. McCreary also has extensive club experience having spent 6 year as the Club Director and Coach of Central Valley Juniors in Hughson and is currently the Assistant Director and 17U Coach with the Extreme Volleyball Club out of Modesto, CA.
McCreary replaces Erika Rinset on the women's side and Aaron Gill on the men's. Rinset departs as the winningest coach in program history recording 50 wins over her three year stint and lead the Lady Hawks to the Cal Pac Championship match during her first year.
Gill departs after just one season at the helm of the program he started. The Hawks produced a solid inaugural season spending some time ranked in the NAIA's Top 10.
