Welcome Back! It is great to see everyone on campus for another great semester at HNU. As you begin to walk around you will notice some changes that took place while you were gone. The cafeteria and skyroom will look, and sound, somewhat different to you.

You may also notice some great changes happening with Technology on our campus. This week Elena Olkhovskaya gives us all a Technology Update in our Feature.

Technology Update

By Elena Olkhovskaya

Director of Information Technology

We would like to welcome our new and returning students to the Holy Names University 2007-2008 academic year. We wish you success in the upcoming year and hope that your HNU experience will enrich your lives for years to come. As we begin this year together, the Information Technology Department would like to share with you some technology news.

Emergency Response and Security System
Security improvements have been implemented which has enabled HNU to be a safer learning environment. We now have an Emergency Response System for alerting students of any emergencies or critical messages. A new surveillance system has also been installed with security cameras situated around the campus.

Internet Access in the Residence Hall
Over the past year our campus population dramatically grew, and as enrollment increased so did the demand for internet service. As a result of the increase in demand, we have installed two additional switches in the Durocher Hall to accommodate additional internet requests from the residents.

While the University is working on a solution to deliver more bandwidth to our campus, we have had to introduce the temporary measure of limiting online gaming to between 7pm to 7am Monday-Friday (unlimited gaming on weekends). We apologize for this temporary inconvenience and thank you for your understanding and support. When the new internet service is installed, our current capacity will triple and allow us to provide the high quality of service that you deserve.

Also for your convenience, in the upcoming weeks we will be adding 6 wireless access points in the Residence Hall. Also, the PC Lab in the Residence Hall will receive additional computers.

Anti Virus Protection Software
Since we all share our network environment, we cannot stress enough the importance for all computers connected to the network to have the latest functional version of anti-virus protection installed. This will protect your equipment and our network from potential viruses.
