Once again members of our community did something incredible for others. This past weekend, our students again spent their Saturday in San Jose working for Habitat for Humanity. The students will be back out again on Saturday working with the Alameda Food Bank. If you are interest in joining on this trip please sign up at the front desk of the residence halls.

This week also marks the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King's mission of Civil Rights is almost synonymous with Social Justice.

Michael S. Miller

Vice President for Student Affairs

His presence in the American Civil Rights Movement raised public consciousness and established him as one of the greatest leaders in American History. You can find links to his "I Have a Dream" speech in This Week's Spotlight on Social Justice.

In our Feature this week, we focus on the Strategic plan of Holy Names. A strategic plan is an organization's process of defining its direction and figuring out the steps and strategies needed to get there. Sr. Carol Sellman, snjm will outline some of the key features of the HNU Strategic Plan.

The HNU Strategic Plan, 2007 - 2012

Strategic planning is an important process in the development of most organizations. It determines where an organization is going over the next several years, how it's going to get there, and how it will know if it got there or not. It also helps to ensure that all members of the organization are working toward the same goals.

In October 2006 Holy Names University began working on the development of our Strategic Plan for the years 2007 to 2012.

Sr. Carol Sellman, snjm

Vice President for Mission Effectiveness

Members of the Planning Council composed of faculty, staff, administrators, and the ASHNU President gathered frequently during that fall and the next spring to develop our current plan.

The goals for the HNU 2007- 2012 Strategic Plan are the following:

Goal I: Offer compelling academic programs, infused with our distinctive vision, that are highly respected, market-sensitive, and experiential to attract and retain promising students.

Goal II: Enroll substantially more semester undergraduate and graduate students, thereby enriching each student's full educational experience.

Goal III: Prepare students to be effective citizens and life-long learners in a rapidly changing and technologically advancing world.

Goal IV: Deliver excellent customer service.

Goal V: Recruit and develop trustees, staff, and faculty, particularly full-time faculty, who reflect our diverse community and perpetuate the charism of the Sisters of the Holy Names.

Goal VI: Increase fundraising directed especially toward investments in faculty, technology, and facilities, as well as endowment.

Each of these goals has specific strategies and actions steps which you can view on the HNU website. We invite you to become engaged in our Strategic Plan. Krystle Green, ASHNU President, sits on the Planning Council and helps us understand the student perspective as we review the plan monthly. Please contact her if you have any ideas or suggestions that will make our plan more student-centered.
