Policy on Community Relations and Student Conduct

Guidelines for off-campus conduct have been established in order to uphold standards of behavior that should be demonstrated by Holy Names University students regardless of whether they are on or off campus. The university encourages its students to behave as exemplary citizens at all times and to demonstrate respect and concern for all members of our global community.

  • Be respectful to local community residents. Prohibited behavior includes but is not limited to: littering, loitering, destruction/trespassing of private property, public urinating, public nudity, using rude or abusive language, or illegal parking.
  • Stereos, car stereos or other electronic equipment at reasonable sound levels, especially late at night or early in the morning.
  • All activities sponsored, sanctioned or organized by registered student organizations, athletic teams or other groups must take place on-campus or in an off-campus facility specifically designed to host such events, i.e., community halls, auditoriums and restaurants.
  • In all cases involving student misconduct off-campus, the university reserves the right to exercise judicial action. Students or organizations found responsible for violating these regulations will be subject to the same sanctions imposed for on-campus violations.

Policies Regarding Student Clubs and Organizations

The vice president for student affairs is responsible for creating and monitoring all policies related to student organizations, and the vice president, or designate, is the final arbiter of these policies.

Below are important university policies that affect student leaders and organizations. Please see the Club and Organization web page for more information.

  • Leadership Positions and Academic Standards -
    • At Holy Names University we value your education. First and foremost, we want to see you succeed. Because of this, all student leaders must maintain the following status:
    • Students must enroll in 12 or more units to be eligible to hold an elected or appointed leadership position in a student organization (e.g., clubs, athletic teams) or to serve in other leadership positions on campus such as resident assistants.
    • Student beyond their first-year of attendance at HNU must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA or higher to be eligible to hold an elected or appointed leadership position in a student organization (e.g., clubs, athletic teams) or to serve in other leadership positions on campus such as resident assistants.
    • Students may request to be exempt from these standards by contacting the Vice President for Student Affairs.

  • Recognition of Student Organizations - A draft of this policy is under development. Click here to see the draft and please contact us for more information.
  • Once a club submits their paperwork online, it is reviewed by a Club Council. This council consists of two students from ASHNU and one staff representative from student affairs. This council will meet on an as-needed basis to approve or deny club proposals. The final say is up to the discretion of the Associate Dean of Students.

  • One a club has been approved they will receive an official letter of recognition. This letter will state if they are fully approved or provisional. All club presidents will be required to attend an Orientation once approved.

  • Informed Consent - This policy explains the procedure required before students engage in any high risk activity, service project or conference travel.
  • Hazing - This policy articulates the university's position on hazing, which is illegal.
  • Fundraising - Student organizations are encouraged to raise funds to support their activities, thus decreasing their total reliance on ASHNU funding. Student organizations may not solicit organizations, individuals, or University departments where no prior relationship exists. For more information, please see the policy governing recognition of student organizations.
  • Disciplinary Actions - Organizations and officers that disregard policies may be subject to collective or individual sanctions through the university's judicial process. If not specified within the regulations themselves, violation of any of these policies may result in one or more of the following sanctions; 1) Cancellation of the event or activity; 2) Cancellation of events or activities for the semester or academic year; 3) Suspension of all club account activity; 4) Fines for repair, replacement or cleaning; 5) Revocation of the organization's university registration for a specified period.

Failure to comply may result in a hold placed on the student's registration or a loss of University housing until the necessary information is submitted.
