Welcome to Holy Names University

Michael S. Miller

Vice President for Student Affairs

You have chosen one of the most diverse universities in the United States to pursue your education.

Home to more than 1,100 students, including more than 600 under-graduates and 400 graduate students, members of the HNU community reflect the ethnic diversity of Oakland and the San Francisco Bay area. In fact, each year, we enroll students from across the continental US and Hawaii, Asia,

Europe, Central America, Canada, South America, and Africa.

At Holy Names University, we are dedicated to your success, and we are committed to making the world a better place. In the classroom and in co-curricular programs, you will learn what it means to be a citizen of the world: a self-reliant, creative and a critical thinker who serves others as a leader for positive social change. You will also learn what it means to be a citizen of HNU: a student engaged academically, spiritually, politically, environmentally, and socially in our community, and in communities beyond our campus.

A distinguishing feature of HNU students is their dedication to issues of social justice. Our students don't just talk about the world, they experience it everyday, and they act on their convictions to do good and great things.

Our students:

  1. Build homes for residents of Tutwiller, Mississippi, during spring break, and through Habitat for Humanity, they help local residents build homes on weekends throughout the spring and fall semesters.

  2. Perform with excellence in their sports. The HNU Women's basketball team has competed in six straight NAIA national post-season tournaments, reaching the Sweet Sixteen twice, and the Men's team made it to the NAIA tournament last season. Also, HNU athletic teams combined to win the California Pacific Conference All-Sports trophy this past Spring.

  3. Volunteer time and for the betterment of our campus and local communities.

  4. Support each other, as colleagues and friends, seeking to make a difference in the lives of each other and ultimately in the world in which we all live.
