Services

Orientation & Instruction Program

Reference Librarians provide classes for students, faculty and staff in the use and evaluation of print and online resources. Instruction in subject-specific resources, tailored to the needs of a specific class, is also provided at faculty request. Please contact the Library Circulation Desk to sign up for a group orientation or to schedule an individual appointment.

Reference Assistance

Librarians are available to assist students with research methodology and use of library resources. They also provide necessary referrals to specialized collections in other libraries. To ensure that your research needs are met, call for an appointment in advance. Drop-in assistance will be provided whenever possible. Reference questions may also be submitted by phone or e-mail.

Book Renewal

Books may be renewed by telephone if they are not overdue. Contact the Circulation Desk (510-436-1332) with the "Date Due" information and the staff will renew them.

Inter-Library Loan

HNU students, faculty and staff may obtain materials not available at Cushing Library from other libraries through inter-library loan. Delivery of materials may take up to 3 weeks. Any fee charged by the lending library is passed on to the HNU user. For assistance, contact Catriona Wendroff, Reference and Instruction Librarian.

Facilities

Computers & Peripheral Equipment

(located to the right of the library main entrance)

  • Eight computer workstations and 2 laser printers are available for accessing the Library's online catalog and research using databases & internet resources.
  • Wiat II & Woodcock Johnson III software are available for scoring education tests.

Media Center

(located at the north end of lower floor)

  • Equipment for viewing videotapes and listening to Library CD's, audiotapes and phonograph records

Research Instruction Room

(located adjacent to the periodical room)

The Library also has an Online Research Classroom with twenty student computer workstations, one instrutor's workstations, an InSight instruction system, one printer and two LCD projectors. The primary purpose of the classroom is library research instruction. This facility may also be reserved for class presentations, special lectures, group viewing of webcasts or DVD's, and staff and faculty development workshops. Research classes.

Photocopiers

(located in the Periodical Room at the north end of the main floor)

  • 2 photocopiers are available at $.10 per copy

Wireless internet access is available throughout the Library.

Cushing Library's collections serve as infrastructure to support the University's curricula, including distance learning programs, by providing a judicious mix of print, media and electronic resources. Special collections accessible within or through the Library include Shakespeariana (shelved in the general collection); local and Bay Area history (Rare Book Room); and a folk music collection representing the regions and ethnic groups of the U.S., and declared an archive by the Library of Congress (Resource Center of the Kennedy Fine and Performing Arts Center). Collection building currently focuses on support for new and growing academic programs.
