Martha and Wesley Jones
Martha and Wesley Jones’ relationship with Holy Names University began with a phone call from their granddaughter Marisa. Marisa was interested in transferring to Holy Names University from Modesto Junior College. Wesley accompanied his granddaughter to a HNU campus visit and interview with an admissions counselor. And after Marisa was accepted to Holy Names University, the Jones participated in orientation activities, and stayed in close contact through her college years.
Martha and Wesley were impressed by Marisa’s educational experiences at HNU.
“I am biracial and have experienced the effects of the lack of understanding of people of different backgrounds,” Marisa Jones ’05 said in her application to the California State University, Stanislaus Master of Social Work program, which she attended after graduating from HNU. “I attended Holy Names University where I lived and worked in a multicultural environment. I felt very lucky to be in classes where so many different ethnicities were represented and it certainly added value to my education.”
Wesley and Martha decided to establish a scholarship in honor of their parents, Thomas and Emma Jones and Morton and Bess Frank. The Jones/Frank Memorial Scholarship, established in October 2007, requires that students maintain a minimum GPA of 2.8 and gives preference to biracial students and descendants of the Jones and Frank families.
Being able to provide support for the education of biracial students and members of the Jones and Frank families is a dream come true for Martha and Wesley.
Since the establishment of the scholarship, the Jones have continued their commitment to Holy Names University through a legacy gift that will perpetuate their family values.
