Holy Names University (HNU) in Oakland, CA, is entering an exciting period of growth as it embarks on its 150th year of empowering a diverse student body for leadership and service. To seize upon the opportunity accompanying with this important milestone, HNU is seeking a dynamic, ambitious Planned Giving Officer (PGO) to join its Advancement team. The primary goal of the PGO is to leverage HNU’s 150th anniversary to engage 150 new Legacy Society members and/or major gifts. The PGO will be a critical member of a motivated, highly skilled Advancement team who work with stakeholders throughout the campus community and beyond. She/he will join the team at an optimistic, forward-looking period for HNU.
Key functions of the position include, but are not limited to:
Actively implementing HNU’s fund-raising strategy, through identification, assessment, cultivation, and solicitation of HNU Legacy Society prospects.
Cultivating and soliciting planned gifts from alumni and non-alumni constituents.
Working collaboratively with and in support of 150th/Sesquicentennial planning committee, Advancement staff, Provost, Trustees and President to cultivate and solicit planned gifts for university-wide priorities.
Managing relationships with approximately 150 prospective HNU Legacy Society members. Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward these very important alumnae and friends of HNU.
Adherence to the highest ethical standards; demonstrating empathetic disposition, and perseverance; reflecting an optimistic and positive attitude, and conveying sensitivity to needs of the donors.
The PGO will embrace, embody and extend the vision and liberating action, courage, and integrity expressed in the SNJM charism.
Participation in all aspects of the gift cycle: Initiating contacts with potential Legacy Society donors and developing appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers and trustees.
Monitoring all prospect contacts to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations.
Utilizing Raiser's Edge database and prospect research tools to identify top prospects. Maintaining contact information in donor records. Completing and storing agreements, memorandums of understanding, pledges, and other pertinent gift documentation.
Partnering with Director of Advancement and Provost to research backgrounds and develop strategies and action plans to identify and cultivate legacy donors. Working collaboratively with Director of Advancement to steward these important relationships.
Develop strategies and proposals with Advancement staff to cultivate, solicit and steward planned giving prospects.
Travel as necessary to cultivate and solicit gifts. Meet with donors to provide information about planned giving opportunities.
Prepare planned giving illustrations and agreements. Collaborate with HNU’s marketing team to develop collateral for planned giving.
A focus on securing support for a set of campus-wide priorities that include academic programs such as the sciences, endowed chairs, scholarships, unrestricted support and campus improvements.
Minimum education required: Bachelor's degree
Five to seven years successful experience in planned gift and major gift fundraising.
Ability to understand the needs and interests of legacy gift donors to develop relationships between them and the University.
In addition to fundraising track record, possible history in finance, estate law, sales or marketing.
Familiarity with planned giving and its complexities: estate planning, tax laws, wills, trusts, etc.
Ability to research and analyze large groups of data to uncover planned giving prospects.
Interest in all aspects of higher education and a dedication to promoting HNU’s fundraising priorities through developing excellent relationships with faculty, academic leaders, trustees, volunteers, and the Advancement team.
Minimum skills required:
Successful experience making cold calls as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies
Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of completing assignments
Proficiency in MS Office, CRM database (Raiser’s Edge a plus)
Familiarity with Crescendo gift planning software a plus
Must be willing to travel
