Michael S. Miller, vice president for student affairs, is an established proponent of student development, learning, and leadership in higher education as they relate to civic engagement and responsible citizenship.
Prior to joining Holy Names University, Mr. Miller had 25 years of experience in higher education, including serving as the chief student affairs officer at Rockford College (Illinois) and Golden Gate University (San Francisco). He also taught courses in the psychology departments at both institutions.
At Rockford College, Mr. Miller was a cofounder and administrator of the Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement, a strategic initiative designed to foster citizenship through service. He has held several positions in professional associations and made numerous presentations on student success and civic engagement, including Students with a Conscience: Civic Learning and Engaged Student Communities, Using Focus Groups in the Assessment of the First-Year Experience, Counseling and Mentoring for Culturally and Ethnically Diverse Student Athletes, and Linking Learning and Communities through Service: The Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement. He is the author of a recent article: Athletics and Academics: The Total Collegiate Experience.
Mr. Miller received his bachelor’s degree from Rockford College and his master’s degree from Loyola University Chicago. He is completing his doctorate at the University of San Francisco where his dissertation research addresses questions related to learning, diversity, and citizenship.
Michael and his wife Blaze Farrar, a marketing and event promotions specialist, live in Oakland, CA.
