Many thanks to Christian Aviles-Scott, Adjunct Mathematics Professor, for providing this very helpful and timely tip:”I’ve learned that Blackbaud, the system behind Hawk’s Edge, does NOT support Safari. So, if students try to preregister using the default browser on one of the campus Macs, they will get unexpected results and error messages. I’ve experienced it first hand trying to help a student find the right math class.”Two workarounds are:1) Use Internet Explorer in Windows (The iMacs and MacBooks in HEDCO, as well as faculty MacBooks, have both Windows and the Mac OS installed on them).2) Use Firefox on the Mac OS. If you do not have Firefox on your Mac, it can be downloaded from the Mozilla website: www.mozilla.com/firefox/.For more information on system requirements, visit: http://www.blackbaud.com/files/sysreqs/eereqs.pdf

Special Projects Last Week: Study Abroad Presentation via Skype. On Thursday, October 14, I assisted Martivon Galindo in a Study Abroad presentation using Skype. The presenter, Jennifer Larson of Central College, presented on Central College’s Study Abroad program from her office in Iowa!

Study Abroad presentation via Skype in the HEDCO Technology Support Center.
Skype is free software used for video and voice chat, instant messaging, and sharing files, as well as other useful communication features. For the presentation, a Skype video chat was setup on a MacBook and projected on the SmartBoard in the HEDCO Technology Support Center. The students were able to see Jennifer on the SmartBoard and the MacBook’s built-in camera also allowed Jennifer to see the students. Students used the MacBook’s built-in microphone to ask her questions. It was a very dynamic and interactive presentation!
How can you prevent the Dock from disappearing when you move the cursor away from it? How can you make the dock icons larger?
Follow these steps to control these dock preferences and much more:
- Open the System Preferences Window (see last week’s tip on how do this)
- Click

- The Dock Preferences Window will open:

Click on image for a clearer view
4. From this window you will be able to change many dock preferences. After you have finished, simply close the window to save your changes (Clicking the red circle will close the window).
- The first option allows you to adjust the size of the dock icons. Simply drag the marker to the desired size.
- The last option controls whether or not the dock will hide when you move the cursor away from the dock. To prevent it from hiding, make sure there is no checkmark in the box next to this option. Click on the box to remove the checkmark and disable this feature.
- Many other preferences can be changed, such as how the windows minimize, the position of the dock on the screen, how applications open etc. Try adjusting these preferences until the Dock is just the way you want it!

- How the document camera can be a used to project not only paper documents, but any object including photos, models, artwork etc.
- How students can contribute to the whiteboard content directly from their computers, even if off-campus.
- How to save your whiteboard screens and open them again so you can start your next class/meeting right where you left off!

There is lots that you can do to customize your dock so that it behaves just that way you want! Besides controlling the application icons that appear on your dock, you can also control the order in which they appear.
- The Dock
To reorder the icons on your dock, follow these quick and easy steps:1) Locate the application’s icon in the dock and put the cursor over it for example, the Microsoft Word Icon icon.
2) Click on the icon and while holding down on the mouse or track pad, drag the icon to where you would like it to appear in the dock. The other icons will make room for the icon as you drag it along the dock.3) Be sure that when you move the icons, you keep them to the left of the dock Size Adjuster.
The area to the right of this divider is for folder and document icons (shortcuts), minimized windows, and the trash . If you try to move an application icon to this area, it won’t work!To see a video of how to rearrange the icons on your dock, go to:http://screencast.com/t/Zjg1N2YzZj
