Suggest or Share a Mac Tip!
Do you have a burning question about how to do a task on your Mac? Do you have a Mac tip of your own to share? Please send them my way!Kudos again to Ann Alderman, Chair of the Arts and Humanities Dept., for guessing this week’s tip too! Here’s what she said  in response to last week’s tip on how to remove program icons from the dock:”Another thing I learned about removing icons: if Hide and dragging do not work, it’s because the program is running in the background.”

——————————————————————————————————–Mac Tip of the Week: Unveiling the Secret of the Blue Dots!Have you noticed that some of the program icons on your dock have blue dots under them? What do they mean? How do you make them disappear?

The Dock
The Dock
The blue dots indicate that although you may have closed an application’s window, it is still running in the background, to provide quick access when you need it again. To completely exit from a program, without it running in the background, you must quit it rather than close it.
To quit an application (and make the blue dots go away), follow these easy steps.

Mac Tip of the Week: Unveiling the Secret of the Blue Dots!Have you noticed that some of the application icons on your dock have blue dots under them? What do they mean? How can you make them disappear?

The Dock
The Dock
The blue dots indicate that although you may have closed an application’s window, it is still running in the background to provide quick access when you need it again. To completely exit from a program, without having it run in the background, you must quit it rather than close it. It is good practice to quit a program that you won’t be using again soon, so it can free up the computer’s resources.
To quit an application (and make the blue dots go away!), follow these easy steps:
Just like last week’s tip and with many tasks on the Mac, there is more than one way to do this. I have provided two ways, the “Quitting From the Application’s Menu” method and the “Keyboard Shortcut” method. The choice is yours!Method 1: Quitting from the Application’s Menu1) Locate the application’s icon on the Dock. 2) Click the icon to open the application’s window.3) On the menu bar, at the top of the application’s window, click on the application’s menu. It is always the menu directly to the right of the menu. For example, if you are in Firefox the menu would be:4) Click Quit (Firefox). The name after “Quit” will change depending on the application. If you quit an application whose icon resides in the dock, the dot will disappear, but the icon will remain. If you quit an application whose icon doesn’t reside in the Dock, the icon itself will disappear from the Dock.
Method 2: Keyboard Shortcut
1)  Locate the icon of the application on the Dock.
2) Click the icon to open the application’s window.
3) Use the keyboard shortcut:  Command KeyQ Key (Press the command button and hold it down while pressing the Q button).
If you quit an application whose icon resides in the dock, the dot will disappear, but the icon will remain. If you quit an application whose icon doesn’t reside in the Dock, the icon itself will disappear from the Dock.

Do you have a special project that you would like to share? Please send them my way and I will post them here!I would also be happy to provide assistance  to get your project rolling! After last week’s newsletter, Christian Aviles-Scott, Adjunct Mathematics Professor, shared his special project:”This semester, my 7:45am section of Math C: Algebra I Workshop is exclusively using an online learning and assessment system called ALEKS. (www.aleks.com) As opposed to the traditional textbook / lecture / homework math class, this class uses artificially-intelligent assessments to determine the strengths and weaknesses of each student, and then teaches only those skills that need remediation. Because every student has different needs and will be studying something different at any moment, my role has changed from lecturer to private tutor. At the end of the semester, both my ALEKS class and my traditional class will take the same final exam so that we can statistically compare the success of ALEKS. After we’ve experimented with the system for a few semesters or years, there is the potential to have HNU’s first completely online math class.”Thanks for sharing Christian. Please keep us updated!

Special Projects:

I have already been involved in several exciting projects to kick-off the new year including:

  • Education Department Faculty Retreat: On Wednesday, August 18, Daniel Ransom, our Librarian for Outreach, Digitization and Electronic Resources, and I were invited to participate in the Education Department Faculty Retreat  in the HEDCO Technology Support Center. I conducted a short presentation highlighting several exciting new services and technologies including the SmartBoard and Document Camera in HEDCO, the new Library Website (library.hnu.edu), and a demo of  how online surveys can be used in the classroom. We had a great time!
  • Online Learning Type Measure: I assisted Thea Maestre in switching from paper-based to online assessment for the Learning Type Measure (LTM). The LTM determine a student’s learning style and is used in EDUC 245 and 332. With the switch to online assessment, students can now take the LTM outside of the classroom. This frees up more class time to  discuss and compare results. The online tool can also be used to visually compare students’ results.

Tip Alert! Mac Tip of the Week will Return!

The popular Mac Tip will make its return next week. Each week, I will share a Mac tip that I have learned from an AHA! moment, helping faculty, working with the Information Technology Dept, etc. I hope that you will find them useful. Stay tuned!

On Friday, May 21, our new SmartBoard was installed in the HEDCO Technology Support Center. The SmartBoard that had been in the Technology Center since the opening was a loaner until our new one was ready. You will notice a big difference!

While this SmartBoard offers the same wonderful features (and more) it is mounted on the wall and takes up a lot less real-estate. I am working with IT and the SmartBoard vendor to plan a SmartBoard training session in July. More details on the training will follow!

Special Projects Last Week

At the Graduate Hooding on Friday May 14, Thea Maestre gave a wonderful speech that reflects our diversity at HNU. Part of her speech included reading a children’s literature book while  extraordinary multicultural illustrations projected on both walls of the VCPA.

MacBook up on the CatWalk. The USB drive plugged into the left side of the computer activated the clicker.

MacBook up on the CatWalk. The USB drive plugged into the left side of the computer activated the clicker.

Two projectors (mounted on the CatWalk railings) and a MacBook were used to project the images, which were scanned with the Library’s new scanner. As Thea read from the book, she used a clicker that commanded the MacBook (located way up on the CatWalk!) to advance to the next slide. Great job Thea!
