Extended hours at Cushing Library continue through May 9 (posted below). But what you REALLY want to know is that at 3 pm on Tuesday May 7 (Study Day), therapy dogs from the East Bay SPCA will visit the Library!

Also, librarians will be offering extended research help hours on Study Day, from 11 am to 8 pm – as well as a wide assortment of nibblies and beverages.

Librarians are on duty weeknights and Saturdays to help you with your research requests. Looking for a study area where you can cool off? The Library’s lower level is comfortable on warm days.

Reminder: on Wednesday, April 24, we will be closed 11:30 am to 2 pm due to the Founders’ Day annual event.

Our hours April 22 through May 9 will be:

• Friday: 9 am to 5 pm
• Saturday: 10 am to 5 pm
• Sunday: noon to 8 pm

Our hours April 22 through May 9 will be:

• Monday through Thursday: 9 am to 11 pm
• Friday: 9 am to 5 pm
• Saturday: 10 am to 5 pm
• Sunday: noon to 8 pm

A few reminders about studying in the library:

• Food and drink are welcome everywhere except near library computers (covered beverages, please)
• The Library Classroom has 20 computers and a printer available for walk-in lab use whenever it’s not in use for instruction (calendar posted on the door and our website)
• The Lower Level is an ultra-quiet zone with large desks and lamps that have outlets for recharging your laptops and other devices
• Group study rooms can be reserved in advance through our website (http://library.hnu.edu) — see the “Reserve a Study Room” tab
• All wound up and need a break? Don’t forget our board games, popular DVDs, graphic novels, and other popular items.
• Plan for special library visitors on Study Day who will make the final stretch a little less stressful!

Cushing Salon Series: Film Showings, “Voices of the Women of Vatican II”

The Catholic Identity Committee is hosting a viewing and discussion on Thursday, April 4^th of the video “Voices of the Women of Vatican II” by Mary Garvin, snjm, PhD. The location is the Library Classroom (to minimize impact on students who are studying elsewhere in the library).

There are two showings: a pizza luncheon at 12:30 pm and a “cookies and nibblies” event at 7:30 p.m. Use the event reminder feature in HNU’s event calendar to RSVP and to send yourself a little nudge:

Black Is, Black Ain't

The Library’s Black History Month display has been so popular we are extending it through mid-February. We have dozens of new books and DVDs for you to browse, check out, and enjoy. See the Library’s Pinterest account to browse these and other resources.

Next up: in mid-March we will roll out a display of graphic novels and DVD movie tie-ins.

VALENTINE’S DAY LUNCHTIME DESSERT CONCERT

When/Where: Thursday 2/14, 12:30 – 1:30 PM, Library Piano Lounge

Bring your lunch but leave room for special Valentine’s Day treats (including amazing cupcakes from local bakery James and the Giant Cupcake) at this piano performance by Chelsea Evana Randall. Chelsea has been a pianist for 12 years and is a jazz piano major at CSU East Bay, where she is part a part of the Jazz Orchestra, the African Drumming Ensemble, and Latin Jazz Combo. She also performs at different venues with her E’vana Trio.

LIBRARY CLOSING EARLY FRIDAY; ALSO CLOSED MONDAY

We are closing at 3 pm Friday, February 15, due to much-needed maintenance on the library’s duct system. We will be open normal hours Saturday and Sunday (10-5, and 12-8) but will then be CLOSED Monday, February 18, in observance of Presidents’ Day.

Humphrey Slocombe Ice Cream Book

Just a couple event reminders from us this week. Also note we constantly add new pleasure reading, both in our traditional print collection and in our tablet-friendly Overdrive collection. We have a wide variety of materials for every reading taste, from biographies of Dietrich Bonhoeffer to the Humphrey Slocombe ice cream recipe book.

TONIGHT: Cushing Salon: Steven Yao and the Poetry of Angel Island
Wed, January 30, 2013 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

At our first event for spring 2013, Dr. Steven Yao will show slides and discuss poetry related to Angel Island Immigration Station, gateway to a million Asian immigrants between 1910 and 1940. Dr. Yao is the 2012-2013 American Council of Education (ACE) Fellow at HNU. Light refreshments served.
