Library Hawk Squawk: Cool Down on our Lower Level

Photo: Lower Level Study Desks On hot days, one of the most comfortable places on campus is the lower level of Cushing Library. It’s not as pretty as our main level, but it’s just the ticket when you need a cool place on a warm day to get some studying done, plus you’ll find strong wifi and plenty of power outlets. The lower level has four study rooms (see our website to reserve space in advance) and a variety of other seating. The open areas are designated “ultra-quiet zones.”

Reminder: Wednesday, September 24, 6 pm – 7 pm, art talk by Dr. Martivon Galindo, Professor of Latin American and Latino/a Studies at Holy Names University. Light refreshments will be served; open to the public. Classes are welcome (just let us know in advance so we can set out enough chairs).

Library Hawk Squawk, 7/1/7/14: Lower Level Closing

So Campus Services can complete the upgrade of our Archive Room — this room’s first “refresh” since the library was built in 1958 — we will be CLOSING the library’s lower level as of Monday, July 21, possibly up to but no later than Orientation.

Library workers will be happy to retrieve any books you need from the lower level, and you may email, call, or text ahead for service (see our website, library.hnu.edu ). Because the closure of the lower level puts the study rooms down there off-limits, we are also relaxing the “two or more” rule for the Seminar Room on the main floor to allow it to be reserved by one person for up to three hours at a time. See our guide for the study room reservation form.

This photo set shows what the Archive Room looked like last week after it was cleared of unneeded items unrelated to Holy Names. We also found two locked boxes… what do you think they hold? Should we hold a contest to guess the contents?

Library Hawk Squawk 7/09/14: You spoke, we listened

Endcap signsIf you visit the Library this week, you’ll see we are deep into a small but important project students asked for in this year’s survey: adding signs to our shelving on the main level.  You’ll appreciate that the next time you’re dashing for a book right before class!

On other fronts, we continue to work to make the Archive Room better organized. You can see all these small bookcases we cleared out yesterday and today.

Don’t forget we have plenty of popular and scholarly books to check out, including traditional books in the Library and e-books you can check out to your favorite mobile device.
