Steve Lake, Vegas Pit Boss, Makes Pit Stop at Holy Names University

June 28, 2008

Lake began his quest to visit 500 college campuses in 1984 and hopes to reach his goal by 2009. He “declared his major” at Harvard University while honeymooning in the Boston area after his marriage to his wife Caroline.

Lake will be taking a tour of the Holy Names University campus from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., and will be available for interviews during that time.  Tim Hart ’07, HNU Admissions Counsellor and Head Men’s Soccer Coach will be giving the campus tour.

Lake schedules his trips to coincide with his vacation from his job as a pit boss at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Lakes a native of Montreal, Canada, says he was motivated to see the full array of campuses because he graduated from Concordia University, which consisted of one 12-story building.

This year, Holy Names University is celebrating its 140th year of its foundation in Oakland. In 1868, six Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary made the trek from Montreal, Canada to the shores of Lake Merritt in Oakland and established HNU to provide a quality education rooted in the Catholic tradition for those under-represented, who at that time were women.  In 1957, HNU moved to the Oakland Hills and became co-educational in 1971. Today, over 70% of our students are from under-represented cultures and represent 21 states in the U.S. and 38 nations.  More than 50% of our students are the first in their families to attend college.
