Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums delivered an inspiring Commencement address to Holy Names University graduates at the university’s 84th Commencement ceremonies on a sunny Saturday, May 10. More than 2,000 people attended the event and 250 students graduated.

HNU President Sister Rosemarie Nassif, SSND, PhD, welcomed graduates and guests and presented graduates with their degrees. President Nassif underscored the historic significance of this commencement, noting that this is HNU’s 140th anniversary. The university was started by six sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary on May 10, 1868, on a small campus across from Lake Merritt.

Ron Rosequist, chair of the HNU Board of Trustees, conferred an honorary degree on Jane G. Logan, HNU trustee. President Nassif said that Mrs. Logan, former Regent and Trustee at HNU, has made outstanding contributions to the growth and development of HNU and was instrumental in the successful campaigns for the Valley Center for the Performing Arts in 1994 and the reconstruction and renovation of the science laboratories and classrooms in 2006. She and her husband, the late Rock Logan, established the R.H. and Jane Logan Endowed Scholarship at HNU. Mrs. Logan was introduced by the Honorable Carol A. Corrigan, ’70, Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court. Justice Corrigan also is a member of the HNU Board of Trustees.

Cornell C. Maier, chairman and CEO (retired) Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp., and an HNU Regent, was presented the Durocher Award. Making the presentation was Cynthia Canning, SNJM, ’68, Co-director of Next Step Learning Center of Oakland and an HNU Trustee.

Student speeches were delivered by Andrew Wilson and Kintina Edouard, both ’08, and senior class representatives. Mozart’s Alleluia was performed by Kathryn Offer, ’08, accompanied on piano by Matthew Walsh, ’08.

Lizbeth Martin, PhD, Vice President of Academic Affairs, presented the degree candidates and the Most Rev. John C. Cummins, Bishop Emeritus, Diocese of Oakland, offered the final blessing. Francisco Ortiz, ’08, gave the invocation.
