The 43rd Annual HNU Alumni Awards CeremonyHoly Names University held its 43rd Annual Alumni Awards Ceremony on Friday, November 4, to recognize exceptional alumni and faculty for their service to the University and the community.

Students in La Voz de Los Estudiantes Poetry Group Hold Readings and Publish Their Work
La Voz de Los Estudiantes, a group formed by several HNU students and advised by Martivón Galindo, PhD, professor of Latin American and Latino/a Studies, held a reading in the Bay Vista Room on November 3. The group published a selection of its members' poetry in a small-run booklet, Ecos del alma: A Poetry of Resistance, at the beginning of December.

The APPSI Speaker Series Hosts Dorothy Ngutter for Presentation on Careers in the Foreign Service
Dorothy Ngutter, recently a National Security Affairs Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and currently the U.S. State Department’s diplomat in residence for the Northwest, visited HNU on November 14 to deliver a presentation about careers in the U.S. Foreign Service.

HNU’s Chili for Charity Cook-off Benefits Alameda County Community Food BankOn Tuesday, November 17, HNU held its annual Chili for Charity Cook-off event in the Public Market. Ten teams from across campus entered the contest and competed for the honor of having the best-tasting chili. Attendees paid an entry fee to taste the different chilis and vote for their favorites. All proceeds from the event were donated to the Alameda County Community Food Bank.

Electra Kimble Price ’73, MA ’75: Community Worker, Dean, Education Advocate, and GenealogistElectra Kimble Price has accomplished a lot in her life. She’s worked in community relations and in the office of the superintendent for Oakland public schools; on the grand jury for Alameda County; on a special education task force for the Department of Justice; at the Family History Center in Oakland; and, in what was perhaps her most astounding job, as both a student and the assistant dean of students at HNU.

The day of service was part of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week at HNU, and the opportunity was arranged through HNU’s Center for Social Justice and Civic Engagement.

HNU Student Veterans Association Organizes Drive for Homeless and Displaced Veterans
From October 24 through November 4, the HNU Student Veteran Association held a donation drive to collect food, toiletries, and other essential products to distribute to homeless and displaced veterans in Oakland. Faculty, staff, and students all contributed items to the drive, as did the Associated Students of HNU (ASHNU) and Farmers Insurance.

Support HNU Through AmazonSmile
Amazon recently unveiled a new program, called AmazonSmile, through which the company supports universities and other charitable organizations. When HNU alumni and friends shop at Amazon through AmazonSmile, Amazon will donate (at no additional cost) a portion (0.5%) of the price of eligible purchases to Holy Names University.

Strong Second Half Leads Hawks to Win Over BYU-Hawaii, 58-49The Holy Names University women's basketball team won its first Pacific West Conference home game of the 2016-17 season on December 4 with a 58-49 victory over BYU-Hawaii at Tobin Gymnasium.

Hawks Win 65-62 Over Cal State Monterey Bay
In the closing seconds of a non-conference game on November 29, the Holy Names University men's basketball team pulled out a dramatic 65-62 victory against Cal State Monterey Bay.

Yohannes Harish Named to All-PacWest Men’s Soccer Third Team
On November 9, the Pacific West Conference announced its 2016 All-PacWest Men's Soccer Awards. From Holy Names University, midfielder Yohannes Harish (Oakland, Calif.) was named to the conference's Third Team.
