Irene Woodward Professorship Awarded to Ann Alderman, PhD, Professor of French and LinguisticsAt the start of the 2015—2016 academic year, Ann Alderman, PhD, was named as the new recipient of the Irene Woodward Professorship, which provides an award for an HNU faculty member to use in pursuit of scholarly or creative interests. The professorship was initiated by the Class of 1970 in honor of Irene Woodward ’55, PhD, professor emerita of philosophy and president of Holy Names College from 1972 to 1982. Alderman is the third recipient of the professorship, after Sophia Park, SNJM, PhD, in 2013—2014, and Martivón Galindo, PhD, in 2014—2015.

HNU Focuses on Labor Justice to Honor Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.During the week of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day, the Center for Social Justice and Civic Engagement (CSJCE) at HNU planned several events that focused on the theme of labor justice. On MLK Day, HNU students traveled with staff from the CSJCE to volunteer at Oakland Catholic Worker, where they helped cook and deliver meals to migrant day laborers. In addition, two representatives from Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA)—an organization that works with Latina immigrant women to promote personal transformation and work for social and economic justice—visited campus to speak to students and staff.

SFPD Officers Speak at HNU About Career Opportunities
San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) Officers Gayla Bunton and William Levy, members of the department's recruitment unit, visited HNU on Friday, January 22, at the invitation of the HNU Black Student Union. Bunton and Levy were invited to speak both about their experiences as officers and the careers available within SFPD.

Holy Names University Becomes an Oakland Promise College PartnerHNU President William J. Hynes, PhD, signed a declaration of support, on behalf of the University, at the launch of Oakland Promise on Thursday, January 28. By the declaration, HNU becomes an official Oakland Promise College Partner, and will support the Oakland Promise mission of making a college degree accessible to all Oakland students.

HNU's Tsze Tsang, PhD, Helps Discover Cotellic, A New Drug for the Treatment of Advanced Melanoma
HNU’s Tsze Tsang, PhD, Helps Discover Cotellic, A New Drug for the Treatment of Advanced MelanomaPrior to his appointment as an assistant professor of chemistry at Holy Names University (HNU) in 2010, Tsze Tsang, PhD, worked as a senior scientist in the medicinal chemistry department at Exelixis, a biotechnology company in South San Francisco, California. As part of a team working on new cancer drugs discovery at Exelixis, Tsang helped discover cobimetinib (brand name Cotellic), a drug for the treatment of advanced melanoma. After a favorable initial clinical trial (phase I) in 2006, the drug was licensed to Genentech, who oversaw all subsequent clinical trials (phase II and phase III). On November 10, 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the approval of Cotellic to be used to treat patients with advanced melanoma.

HNU’s Martin Lampert, PhD, Teaches Laughter Yoga to HNU’s NeighborsIn partnership with the Redwood Heights Neighborhood Association, Martin Lampert, PhD, professor of psychology at HNU, has started teaching a free laughter yoga class at the Redwood Heights Recreation Center, a neighborhood facility that sits adjacent to the University campus.

Alumni Spotlight: Fatema Dadgar '14
Alumni Spotlight: Fatema Dadgar ’14Fatema Dadgar ’14 graduated from HNU with a degree in philosophy and has worked as assistant registrar at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, for the past two years, and at the school in other capacities for the past six years. Dadgar first attended HNU (then Holy Names College) in 1993, but left before graduating. She returned to HNU and finished her degree in 2014. Despite living on the East Coast, Dadgar feels very connected to the University and recently made her first gift in support of HNU.

Carrier Named to NCBWA Preseason All-West Region Second Team
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced its 2016 Preseason National Poll, Preseason All-America Team, and Preseason All-Region Teams. Named to the NCBWA Preseason All-West Region Second Team was Holy Names University senior starting pitcher Trent Carrier.

Hawk of the Week: Garysha YoungbloodThe Hawk of the Week has been announced for the week of Jan. 11-18, and the winning student-athlete is Garysha Youngblood (Berkeley, Calif.), a junior from the HNU women's basketball team. The weekly award is determined by a public vote, as well as votes by select HNU Athletics staff members.

HNU Head Coach Omar Sanchez Speaks to Students at Emerson Elementary School
On January 8, HNU men's basketball head coach Omar Sanchez spoke to 5th grade students at Emerson Elementary School about the importance of academics and the role it plays in anything they want to do. The coach spoke about where he came from and how he got to be a coach.
