Sr. Sophia Bestowed Irene Woodward Professorship

Summer Institute at the Sophia Center
The Sophia Center will explore the mystery of nature and soul at its Summer Institute from July 18–21. The institute will feature spirituality, ecology, and social justice leaders. The center will also host a post-institute retreat.

HNU Hosts Final Public Safety Event
In collaboration with the Office of Councilmember Libby Schaaf, HNU hosted the Safe Oakland Speaker Series that featured leading criminal justice scholars and practitioners. Topics included the economics of safety and police, constitutional policing matters, and neighborhood policing.

Grazing Goats at HNU
About 600 goats went to work on the HNU hillsides in May. Experts in controlling vegetation, the goats grazed to help prevent fires during the summer season.

HNU to Offer Men’s Tennis in the Fall
Coach Scott Howard has been actively recruiting student-athletes for the men’s tennis team, which launches in the new academic year. With the addition of this sport, HNU Athletics is participating in 13 NCAA sponsored athletic programs.

Athlete Earns PacWest Honors
Freshman pitcher Vanessa Pulido helped her team to a 7–4 victory over Dominican University in the game that ended the 2013 softball season. Pulido’s performance earned PacWest honors; she was named to the Fantastic 15 in May.

HNU in the Community

Raskob Selected as NASET School of Excellence
The National Association of Special Education Teachers selected Raskob Day School and Learning Institute as a School of Excellence for the 2013–2014 academic year. The school was recognized for its dedication, commitment, and achievement in the field of special education.

Nursing Students Volunteer at Community Health Fair
HNU nursing students volunteered at a community health fair where they took blood tests and blood pressure readings, taught attendees how to perform breast exams, and made health assessments. Nursing Students Volunteer at Community Health Fair
