Holy Names University held its 42nd Annual Alumni Awards Ceremony on Friday, October 2, to recognize exceptional alumni and faculty for their service to the University and the community.

Convocation 2015: Rise Above
Convocation 2015: Rise AboveHoly Names University celebrated its 135th Convocation on Wednesday, September 16. Students, faculty, and staff gathered together to welcome the class of 2019 and officially begin the 2015—16 academic year. The theme for this year's Convocation was Rise Above, and alumni speakers Nga Do ’98 and Fred Lucero ’97 spoke on that theme and discussed the ways in which their HNU experiences had enabled them to rise above challenges they encountered in their lives.

Curator from the Oakland Museum of California Delivers Lecture on "Pacific Worlds" Exhibition
Suzanne Fischer, PhD, associate curator of contemporary history and trends at the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA), delivered an illustrated lecture at HNU on September 22 about Pacific Worlds, an exhibition that opened at OMCA in May. Pacific Worlds features items from the museum's collection of Pacific Island artifacts alongside contemporary work from California Pacific Islanders.

The Return of Gilgamesh-A-Thon
The Return of Gilgamesh-A-ThonFor the second straight year, HNU students, faculty, and staff performed a public reading of The Epic of Gilgamesh, a Sumerian poem dating from 1800 B.C. This year, more than 70 students attended the two-hour reading, which was held in the Glass Lounge of the Paul J. Cushing Library.

HNU Faculty and Graduate Student Host Panel on Education
On August 23rd, HNU Education Department Chair Kimberly Mayfield, PhD, HNU Associate Professor of Education Kitty Kelly Epstein, PhD, and HNU graduate student Francisco Ortiz facilitated dialogue with the Oakland community and educators in the Oakland Public School District during an event at Geoffrey's Inner Circle in Oakland.

President's Circle Reception Honors Donors
On the evening of September 10, HNU President William J. Hynes, PhD, and his wife, Mrs. Margie Shurgot Hynes, hosted a President's Circle reception at their beautiful home. The event drew more than 40 attendees, which included members of the President's Circle, Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, and friends of HNU. The President's Circle is a giving society that recognizes donors who make an annual gift of $1,000 or more to the HNU Fund.

Multiple Career-Highs Met in HNU's 3-0 Win Over Mills
Multiple Career-Highs Met in HNU’s 3-0 Win Over Mills On October 3, the Holy Names University women's volleyball team swept Mills College in three sets, 25-4, 25-12, 25-9. There were multiple career records met in the non-conference match for the Hawks.

Third Place Finish for HNU at Sonoma State Invitational
The Holy Names University men's cross country teams competed in the 2015 Sonoma State Invitational 8K on October 3, and finished in third place with a total of 81 points.

Hawk of the Week: Jesse Kaneshiro
The Hawk of the Week has been announced for the week of Sept. 21-28, and the winning student-athlete is Jesse Kaneshiro (Kaneohe, Hawaii), a freshman from the HNU women's golf team. The weekly award is determined by a public vote, as well as votes by select HNU Athletics staff members.
