Study Abroad: This course (17 day intensive in Italy) will examine Rome and Florence through 3000 years of history. In Rome students will study important sites, view artifacts and experience spaces spanning 500 BCE to 1700 CE. Simultaneously students will participate directly in everyday life in “The Eternal City”, such as planning Roman meals, buying food in open air markets, watching opera and observing and recording what Rome is today. Students will also study for three days in Florence as a means of comparing urban areas and analyzing the origins of the Renaissance. Students will be required to read assigned texts before visits are made to corresponding sites; as well as keep a daily writing journal, students are required to write a one page presentation on a specific historical figure (as assigned) as well as create a culminating activity (3-4 page analytical essay, 5-7 page written memoir/reflections, or a personalized project with approval from Professor Cusano)
