Convocation
In the fall, Convocation is held as a ceremonial way to officially begin the academic year and welcome new students on their academic journey. The whole campus community is invited to participate in this celebration. Special recognition is given to scholarship recipients at this time.
ISAC Fall Festival
Each semester, faculty members from ISAC (Integrative Studies across Cultures) present the ISAC Fall Festival (once known as the CORE Festival). This event celebrates multicultural diversity through dramatic performances, song, dance, and food. Students in the ISAC classes take part in the organization, implementation and entertainment for the festival. The celebration takes place in the St. Francis courtyard during lunchtime.
Founders' Day
The Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, a religious congregation of the Roman Catholic Church, founded Holy Names University. In 1868, six members of this teaching order came to Oakland from Montreal, Canada, to establish a school for girls on the shores of Lake Merritt.
Upon arrival, May 10, the weary but excited travelers were greeted with great warmth and provided with a snack of strawberries and cream--an exotic treat at this time of the year for the Sisters from Canada. Each year, the religious faculty and staff continue to commemorate Holy Names’ beginning in California by serving strawberries to the students, staff, and faculty on Founders' Day.
Presently, the Founder’s Day celebration, which is usually observed early in spring, includes student leadership and academic recognition, as well as staff and faculty service awards.
Homecoming
Each fall, Holy Names’ alumni return to their alma mater for Homecoming. The office of Alumni Relations sponsors this event. Alumni celebrate Mass and dine with former classmates and professors. Awards are given to faculty and alumni for service to the University and the community-at-large.
