RECONCILIATION. PASTORAL CARE. SPIRITUAL DIRECTION. COUNSELING SERVICES.

Sacrament of Reconciliation:

Sundays, 6-6:30PM (except the fourth Sunday of each month), in the McLean Chapel

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a healing ritual in which an ordained priest assists an initiated Catholic, who confesses her/his sin(s), to embrace and celebrate God’s forgiveness and grace for a better Christian life (see Richard P. McBrien, Catholicism, vol. II, pp. 777f). To prepare for this sacrament, a person must first, privately note the specific sins to confess; then s/he repents and resolves to change; and then s/he goes to the priest to confess.

In order to meet the needs of others, we ask that your confession does not exceed five minutes. For more in-depth spiritual counsel and reflection, please schedule an appointment for Pastoral Care or Spiritual Direction.

Seasonal Reconciliation Services: A reconciliation service is a sacrament of reconciliation as explained above, except, in this case, the preparatory part is organized and observed by a community of persons. (Campus Ministry at HNU will be offering a reconciliation service during the season of Lent.)

Pastoral Care:

Pastoral Care involves actions taken in the name of a Church or Campus Ministry, by the pastor/chaplain or other designated ministers, to help students who experience any difficulty in participating fully in the life of the faith community. These actions include visiting, praying for healing, and giving communion of the sick, clarifying matters regarding Church teachings and policies, encouraging, blessing students in their projects, consoling the troubled and bereaved, and many more. Students with any religious needs can contact the chaplain or the Campus Minister.

Note: In both the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Pastoral Care, the minister may recommend a student to seek more extensive and professional assistance such as spiritual direction, counseling, or other clinical support.

Spiritual Direction:

How do you experience God’s presence in the joys and sorrows of your day to day life? Where is the Spirit leading you? How does the Spirit call you into deeper faith and more generous service?

A Spiritual Director does not give advice, guidance, or answers, but helps “a person to pay attention to God’s personal communication to him or her, to respond to this personally communicating God, to grow in intimacy with this God, and to live out the consequences of the relationship” (William A. Barry and William J. Connolly, The Practice of Spiritual Direction). Spiritual Direction differs from Pastoral Care insofar as it is not bound up with the institutional Church, but with the unique relationship between you and God.

For Reconciliation, Pastoral Care, or Spiritual Direction, contact: Carrie Rehak, Ph.D., Director of Campus Ministry, 510-436-1081, rehak@hnu.edu

Counseling Services:

Holy Names offers personal counseling to all students regardless of belief or faith. Counseling is a time set aside for you to explore how you are feeling, what you want, and what is and is not working in your life. HNU’s counselors are trained professionals with doctoral level education in counseling and clinical psychology. Our counselors specialize in working with college students and understand that your lives involve more than just school. Counselors are open, non-judgmental, and culturally sensitive people who are here to listen and to help you negotiate life’s challenges.

For Counseling Services, contact: Adam Beyda , Psy.D., Director of Counseling & Psychological Services, counseling@hnu.edu,Phone: 510/436-1530
