Interested in working at the Writing Studio? During the academic year, we employ Holy Names University students as Undergraduate and Graduate Writing Consultants, and professionals in the community as intern Writing Fellows. We hire Undergraduate and Graduate Writing Consultants when we have an available opening (typically, at the start of a new semester). We hire new Writing Fellows each spring semester to fill non-paid internship positions for the upcoming school year.

Time Commitment

Undergraduate Writing Consultants: 8-10 hours per week
Graduate Writing Consultants: 8-20 hours peer week
Writing Fellows: 4-10 hours per week

Writing Consultants

  • attend training and regular staff meetings each semester.
  • hold one-to-one consultation sessions across disciplinary boundaries with student-writers of all skill levels and learning styles.
  • create and facilitate workshops and generate relevant handouts.
  • conduct classroom visits.
  • engage in periodic mentoring sessions with other consultants.
  • attend Writing Studio sponsored events.
  • participate in and develop Writing Studio outreach programs.

Students who demonstrate engagement and growth in the position are invited to return as consultants from one academic year to the next.

Undergraduate Writing Consultants have all complete English 160: Tutorials in English, which is offered every fall semester, with a B+ or higher. (Students must have taken and completed English 160 with a B+ or higher to apply for the position.) Consultants must also maintain an overall GPA of 3.25 or better, demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, and be intellectually curious and professional. After meeting these requirements, students are welcomed to download and submit an application, which is found on the Writing Studio website ending each semester.

Graduate Writing Consultants must provide a statement of support from a departmental Director of Graduate Studies verifying availability for employment in the Writing Studio. Candidates must submit a CV, statement on teaching, and cover letter demonstrating specific interest in and dedication to the teaching of writing. Writing Fellows are nominated by Holy Names University faculty and staff. To earn a nomination, candidates must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, and  should be intellectually curious and professional. Once nominated, candidates will be invited to apply for the non-paid position.
