Latin American and Latino/a Studies is an exciting program that shows the strength, color, and variety of cultures and a history full of interesting and decisive moments. The 30-unit major is designed for people who understand the importance of learning about Latinos in Latin America and the United States, their culture, and their struggle. The Latin American and Latino/a Studies Program offers incredible possibilities to work with Latinos in the United States or in Latin America, through governmental, non-profit and international organizations.
According to the 2010 census, 50.5 million Latinos live in the United States, enriching this country with their labor and their extraordinary contributions to music, literature and the visual arts. In order to understand this huge population, students learn about their countries of origin, their history and culture. Latin America is a complex and diverse region. The region is a land of artistic expression and vibrant traditions, which grow out of its mixture of races, including a multifaceted indigenous presence, many different cultures, and unequal levels of economic and technological development.
