Scholarships and Awards

Scholarships and awards are the lifeblood of HNU’s efforts to enable qualified, yet disadvantaged, students to join its diverse student body. Establishing a scholarship is an investment in people, in education, in society.

Without the $4 million in financial aid the University awards each year to students in need, many of today’s HNU students would not be able to realize their dream of a college education. Today, with your support, we remain true to the Holy Names mission of serving those most in need. Some 40% of our students qualify for Pell grants, which means that the Federal Government has designated them as not having sufficient economic resources to pay for college, and over 50% of our students are the first generation in their families to attend college. All but 1% of our undergraduates receive scholarship and other financial aid. Holy Names is fortunate in having more than 70 scholarship and financial aid programs available to its students each year and the number keeps growing thanks to the incredible support of alumni, corporations, and other friends of HNU.

To mark the 150 years that the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary have dedicated to educational service in the Bay Area, HNU has set a fundraising goal of $8 million for scholarships. Your gift will make a world of difference by offering our students possibilities they never imagined. It will enable HNU to sustain an environment in which students can attain the hallmarks of transformational leadership.

Endowed vs. Annual Scholarships

Establishing an endowment provides a permanent and ever-increasing source of income for your scholarship or award. The capital is held in perpetuity and invested. A portion of the interest earned is distributed. The remaining interest is re-capitalized into the endowment to preserve the value of the fund over time. As the fund grows, so does its yield of student awards. A gift of $20,000 or more will establish a named endowment fund that will continue to grow and support students in perpetuity.

An annual award is an easy way to get involved and support students. With an annual award, the entire amount of your gift is directed to students. This is a great way to help students while you develop your own long-term philanthropic goals. You can establish an annual award with a gift of $1,000 or more per year, for a four year commitment.

Benefits to You

Your private scholarship or award can honor a milestone, birthday or anniversary, or perpetuate the memory of someone dear, raise the profile of your company among our student and faculty populations, or recognize a special achievement to inspire and encourage those in others.

Take a Look at the Next Generation!

Each year over 200 new traditional undergraduate students join HNU. Each one of them can transform the world. By supporting HNU scholarships you are unleashing this potential and helping to empower the next generation of leaders.
