“Who do you think you are?”
In some ways, this question sums up the encounter with Jesus and his family and friends in this Sunday’s gospel. Even though Jesus would teach, preach and heal, those who knew him from birth would ask: “where did he get all of this?” and “is this not the son of the carpenter”? In many ways, we too can fail to see the potential of others. We may remember only what we know of the past, and box people in. At times, we do this to ourselves as well. Being in an educational setting, such as Holy Names University, we have the opportunity to learn and grow in knowledge. But we also have the opportunity to grow as a person. Like the great heroes in stories like “The Wizard of Oz” and “Star Wars” and the Harry Potter books—it is a time of discovery as we journey with others.
Let us follow the example of Jesus who was totally open to discovering and using his gifts for the sake of the reign of God!
