Casa de Paz (House of Peace) is one of the houses that comprise the Canticle Farm, a community that provides a platform for the Great Turning -- the planetary shift from an industrial-growth society to a life-sustaining society -- one heart, one home, and one block at a time. Canticle Farm is located in East Oakland, intentionally grounded among the physically poor, marginalized and disenfranchised. This is where the effects of militarization, social disintegration, and environmental degradation are most keenly experienced and precisely where there is fertile ground for engaging in the Great Turning. In a neighborhood where despair and violence has often been one of the common responses to our urban challenges, people living at Casa de Paz at the Canticle Farm strive for integral nonviolence and support activities that foster fearlessness, courage, autonomy, unconditional love and compassion for all beings.
Every Friday, the residents of Casa de Paz -- whose main door is unlocked 24hrs, all days of the week -- hosts "Wednesdays on Fridays", an open-house meditation night that was inspired by a family in Santa Clara that has been doing this for more than 15 years. The format goes like this ...
|7:00PM||An hour of collective silence; its unguided, without any instructions or music. For first-timers, this primer on meditation may be helpful.|
|8:00PM||A short reading (sent out earlier via email), followed by a circle of sharing of "aha" moments from everyday life.|
|9:00PM||A vegan meal, offered in silence. Those who stay afterwards are invited to offer time to related projects of the Great Turning.|
